On July 23, 2026, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, announced that leaders from the INDIA coalition would be visiting Gandhi Smriti on Tees January Marg to extend their support to students affected by the recent NEET-UG paper leak. Following a meeting held at his residence, Gandhi expressed that the opposition stood firmly with students injured during police actions on July 20.

In an update shared via social media platform X, he stated, “MPs and leaders of the INDIA alliance are peacefully heading to Gandhi Smriti to remember the students we lost and to support those who are now injured, beaten for demanding accountability.” This statement highlighted the opposition’s commitment to student welfare and justice.

The group of opposition MPs boarded a bus destined for the memorial, which commemorates Mahatma Gandhi. However, police had established barricades outside Rahul Gandhi’s residence as Congress supporters gathered in significant numbers, causing a breach of security. Authorities later urged the leaders to disperse, cautioning them against proceeding with the protest.

Concerns Over Government’s Response to Student Issues

Uday Bhanu Chib, the National President of the Indian Youth Congress, condemned the detention of Rahul Gandhi, claiming it demonstrated the government’s failure to protect students’ interests. “They should be ashamed for placing the Leader of the Opposition under house arrest,” he asserted, emphasising the need for action against paper leaks to safeguard the future of the youth.

Chib also noted that the leaders were en route to India Gate with the intention of advocating for students’ rights, arguing that their democratic process was being hindered by fears within the government. He linked the restriction of Gandhi’s movement to a broader issue of governmental accountability and attentiveness to student concerns.

This incident illustrates the ongoing tensions between the opposition and the government regarding education-related issues, specifically the NEET-UG paper leak. The controversy has sparked calls for the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan as part of the opposition’s conditions for engaging in discussions on the matter.
