Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has escalated his criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the ongoing protests surrounding the NEET examination paper leaks. On Saturday, Gandhi highlighted the government’s approach, asserting that while it is capable of closing down essential services such as food supply, public transport, and shops, it fails to prevent the issue of paper leaks.

In a post on social media platform X, Gandhi expressed his views on the government’s “cruel” actions against students who are advocating for their rights. He remarked that the measures taken against the protesting students are evident, as he stated, “You could shut everything down, Modi Ji—except for one thing: paper leaks.”

Prior to this, Gandhi condemned what he described as the “brutality” exhibited by the Central Government and the Delhi Police during a series of protests that took place on July 20 in the capital. He claimed that modern-day students seeking justice are met with violence, receiving “pellets” instead of support.

Government Response to Protests and Legislative Measures

In the wake of the unrest, more than 118 police officers reportedly sustained injuries, including those in senior ranks such as Special Commissioner and Joint Commissioner of Police. The confrontations also led to approximately 60 protesters being injured during the altercations.

As discontent over the NEET-UG examination continues to grow, the Union Cabinet approved amendments to the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024, aimed at bolstering the legislation against paper leaks. This decision comes amidst persistent nationwide protests, with parliament having experienced a deadlock for five consecutive days.

It is anticipated that the proposed amendment Bill will be presented in Parliament on July 27. This legislative move appears to address the escalating unrest and aims to provide a structured response to the ongoing crises concerning examination integrity.

Prime Minister’s Commitment and Activist Actions

Amid these developments, Prime Minister Modi delivered a late-night video address via X, wherein he pledged to implement “stricter” measures against paper leaks to quell the protests led by activists including those from the Cockroach Janata Party. He indicated that the Union Cabinet would consider a draft Bill addressing this pressing issue.

Additionally, social activist Sonam Wangchuk ended a 26-day hunger strike at Medanta Hospital, following discussions with Union Ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh. He received a written assurance from the government regarding reforms needed in the NEET examination process and the broader competitive testing framework in India.

The ongoing protests and responses from both the government and activists reflect a broader concern regarding the fairness and integrity of competitive examinations, with implications for countless students across the nation. The situation remains fluid as stakeholders continue to navigate these challenges whilst seeking resolutions.
