Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has strongly condemned recent police actions against protestors in New Delhi, who were advocating for reform in the education sector. During a press conference held on July 22, he highlighted that over the past decade, there have been 152 reported incidents of examination paper leaks, affecting approximately 7.5 crore students and their families. This statistic suggests that, on average, one paper leak occurs each month, subjecting countless students to repeated stress and uncertainty regarding their exams.

Gandhi remarked that the educational system, once revered as among the finest globally, has become compromised. The Congress party is vocally supporting the demands of students, maintaining that the current structure does not adequately serve their needs or ensure their rights. He underscored the distress faced by students and their families, many of whom are from middle-class or economically disadvantaged backgrounds, making substantial sacrifices for their education.

Concerns About the Undermining of Student Rights

The Congress MP raised critical concerns about the treatment of peaceful protestors, who have been met with law enforcement presence. Gandhi questioned the rationale behind such actions, asserting that students have their rights to demand a fair educational system. He expressed alarm over the tragic incidents of student suicides, linking these to the intense pressures placed on them due to systemic failures, including last-minute notifications of paper leaks.

In addressing the issues faced by students, Gandhi insisted that it is unacceptable for educational institutions to jeopardise the futures of students through negligence. He regarded the existing situation as a severe violation of students’ rights, declaring their demands for justice and reform as legitimate. The emotions of frustration and despair experienced by students and their families were highlighted, calling for immediate attention to their grievances.

Gandhi’s comments reflect broader concerns about the integrity of the education system in India. He posited that the system is allegedly controlled by vested interests, resulting in significant detriment to innocent students who aspire for a quality education. His statements sought to mobilise support for the protestors and demand accountability from the authorities.

Financial Burden of Education and Its Ramifications

In his address, Gandhi also raised alarms regarding the financial burden placed on families participating in competitive exams such as NEET. He claimed that expenditures for these exams can equate to the government’s entire annual education budget, which stands at Rs 1.4 lakh crores. In stark contrast, families reportedly spend around Rs 1.32 lakh crores annually for their children’s preparation for these exams, a scenario Gandhi referred to as “theft” from families.

Further emphasising the economic strain, he argued that while families are striving to invest in their children’s education, the system overregulates and subsequently undermines their efforts through alleged mismanagement and corruption. According to him, the discrepancy between governmental spending and families’ expenses highlights systemic issues that need urgent redress.

Gandhi concluded by pointing out that this situation not only impacts individual families but poses a larger threat to the educational landscape of the nation. He called on the government to take responsibility for the ongoing issues and work towards creating a more equitable and just educational environment for all students. By addressing these pressing concerns, it is believed that the integrity and effectiveness of India’s education system can be restored.
