PV Sindhu And Lakshya Sen To Lead India’s Badminton Teams At Asian Games

The Indian badminton contingent for the 20th Asian Games has been officially announced, with two-time Asian Games medallist PV Sindhu and 2022 Asiad men’s doubles gold medallists Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty at the forefront. The prestigious event, set to occur in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan from September 19 to October 4, 2026, will showcase top athletes from across Asia, offering a platform for national pride.

The squad selection was finalised by the Badminton Association of India (BAI) following a detailed assessment of recent performances in national and international competitions, as well as player rankings from May 26, 2026. Leading the men’s contingent is Lakshya Sen, who is currently India’s top-ranked men’s singles player, along with established athletes HS Prannoy and Kidambi Srikanth, who were instrumental in securing a silver medal for India in the previous edition of the Asian Games.

A notable inclusion is Badminton Asia Championships silver medallist Ayush Shetty, alongside BWF World Junior Championships individual silver medallist Tanvi Sharma and team championship medalist Unnati Hooda, all of whom have demonstrated commendable performances in recent months.

India’s Historical Performance At The Asian Games

India enters the Asian Games with a history of success in badminton, having amassed a total of 13 medals throughout its participation. In the last edition, India achieved its most successful badminton outcome, winning one gold medal, one silver, and an individual bronze secured by HS Prannoy. The country’s highest medal tally came during the 1982 Asian Games held in New Delhi, where India earned five bronze medals.

For the upcoming championship, the Indian squad comprises noteworthy combinations across various categories. The men’s doubles team of Hariharan Amsakarunan and M. R. Arjun is in formidable shape, with Arjun also bringing valuable experience from the 2022 silver-winning men’s team campaign. Furthermore, the women’s doubles pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand remains a steadfast option for India’s doubles challenge, supported by emerging talents like Simran Singhi and Kavipriya Selvam.

The singles contingent is also well-represented, with Thailand Masters Super 300 champion Devika Sihag and other promising players such as Isharani Baruah and Tharun Mannepalli enhancing the depth within the squad.
