A four-year-old girl was reportedly sexually assaulted and murdered by a 65-year-old labourer in a village located in Pune, Maharashtra. The case, which has stirred widespread outrage and protests, occurred when the accused allegedly lured the child with promises of food. According to Pune Superintendent of Police, Sandeep Singh Gill, the perpetrator took the girl to a cattle enclosure, where the assault and murder allegedly took place.

The incident unfolded on Friday, with the girl going missing during the afternoon while visiting her maternal grandmother for the school holidays. Concerned family members initiated a search that was intensified once CCTV footage revealed the suspect leading the child towards the cattle shed. This evidence was crucial in the police’s swift identification and subsequent arrest of the accused.

Authorities located the victim’s body hidden inside the shed. Law enforcement has filed a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act, emphasising a serious approach to the horrific crime.

Protests Erupt in Response to the Incident

The tragedy has triggered a significant local response, with hundreds of villagers gathering outside a police outpost to demand stringent action against the accused. Protests led to a blockade on the Mumbai-Bengaluru Highway, severely affecting traffic flow in the area. Demonstrators have expressed their anger over the incident, insisting on immediate justice and demanding that the perpetrator face severe punishment.

As tensions rose, villagers reportedly resisted initial police attempts to remove the body for a post-mortem examination, voicing their demands for swift justice. Superintendent Gill confirmed that the police acted promptly upon receiving information regarding the incident, reinforcing their commitment to a thorough investigation.

The accused, who has a documented criminal history, had earlier faced charges in 1998 and 2015, from which he was acquitted. He was employed as a labourer in the vicinity, raising concerns about the safety of children in the area.

Political Reactions and Ongoing Investigation

Supriya Sule, a member of parliament from the Nationalist Congress Party, described the act as a grievous assault on humanity, urging the Chief Minister to instruct the Home Department to prioritise the investigation. Her comments reflect a widespread sentiment that immediate legislative actions and reforms are necessary to ensure the safety of children.

Authorities have appealed for calm among the residents, assuring them that justice will be pursued vigorously. They have promised to take all necessary steps to ensure a thorough investigation, with measures in place to hold the accused accountable swiftly and appropriately.
