Baruipur Case Presents Major Challenge for BJP Government

The CSR Journal Magazine

The tragic case of a minor girl’s rape and murder in Baruipur, located approximately 30 km from Kolkata, has emerged as a significant challenge for the recently elected BJP government, led by Suvendu Adhikari. The girl’s body was discovered stuffed in a gunny bag in a pond after she had gone missing. Her family reported the girl missing on July 4, around 4.30 pm, after she left home to buy a birthday gift for a friend, but did not return. The local community is outraged, particularly due to allegations of delayed police response.

The initial autopsy results revealed that the girl had suffered severe sexual abuse and traumatic injuries before being disposed of, which has exacerbated public anger. Eyewitness accounts from CCTV footage identified two youths near the area where she was last seen, leading to community-led efforts to locate her. Unfortunately, her body was discovered only after a protracted search, occurring around 9 am on July 7.

The shocking nature of the crime has led to widespread protests, with locals demanding accountability from law enforcement officials. The father of the victim expressed despair, highlighting that had the police acted more swiftly when the family filed a report, the tragic outcome might have been avoided.

Political Fallout and Reactions

This incident has provided Mamata Banerjee, the opposition leader, a pivotal moment to challenge the BJP government. Despite facing criticism internally, Banerjee maintains the capability to rally public sentiment and influence the political dialogue in West Bengal. Following the incident, she led a candlelight vigil to commemorate the victim, even in the face of police barricades near her residence.

In response to security measures instituted outside her home, Banerjee alleged she was effectively under “house arrest,” questioning the need for such heavy protection. The BJP, however, has characterised these measures as standard protocol for Z-plus category protectees and accused the Trinamool Congress (TMC) of attempting to create a publicity stunt around the situation.

On July 6, a delegation from the TMC met with the victim’s family to offer condolences and support. During this interaction, the party attacked Suvendu Adhikari for his absence in Baruipur, paralleling his perceived neglect with that of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has been criticized for not visiting Manipur amid violence there. This incident has presented Mamata Banerjee an opportunity to regain the political stage after facing a challenging period.

Law Enforcement Under Scrutiny

The allegations regarding local police inaction and a BJP leader’s involvement in aiding the accused have further complicated the situation for the BJP government. Reports from eyewitnesses claim that Shantanu Mondol, a local BJP leader, attempted to facilitate the escape of one of the suspects. In response to the unrest, Mondol’s home was attacked by locals angered by the incident.

As the investigation progressed, police arrested three individuals, including the primary suspect, Ananda Sardar, who is reportedly acquainted with the victim’s family. Tensions escalated when it was alleged that Sardar had vanished from police custody, raising questions about the effectiveness of law enforcement’s response.

The brutal details of the case have resonated deeply with the public, leading to protests that saw roads blocked and police vehicles vandalised. The violent response culminated in the mob lynching of a man who was alleged to have connections with the crime. The ongoing unrest serves as a potent reminder of the challenges faced by the current BJP administration, as it navigates this crisis and aims to restore order and public trust.
