Pune Hooch Tragedy Leads to Suspension of 26 Officials as Death Toll Reaches 18

The CSR Journal Magazine

The investigation into the hooch tragedy in Pune has advanced significantly, resulting in the suspension of 26 government officials. These actions have been taken in light of a thorough inquiry into allegations surrounding the illicit liquor trade in the area. Recently, four constables from the Pune Rural Police were suspended after it was found they had connections with Radheshyam Prajapati, a significant figure in the illegal liquor supply chain.

This development follows the suspension of nine personnel from the Pune City and Pimpri-Chinchwad police forces, as well as 13 officials from the State Excise Department. All suspensions stem from negligence in enforcing regulations concerning the illegal liquor trade. Pune Rural Superintendent of Police Sandeep Singh Gill disclosed these administrative actions in a statement to the media.

As the investigation continues, it highlights the systemic issues within law enforcement agencies in preventing such tragedies. The rising number of suspensions signals a shift in accountability as authorities scrutinise the roles of various personnel involved.

Tragedy Claims Lives and Prompts Public Outcry

The tragic incident has resulted in the loss of 18 lives, predominantly occurring in the Phugewadi-Dapodi and Hadapsar regions of Pune. Many of the deceased were the primary earners for their families, exacerbating the grief experienced by their loved ones. Among those who died are two brothers from the same household, underscoring the personal tragedies that result from the illegal trade.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, various criminal cases have been initiated, including provisions under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Maharashtra Prohibition Act. Additionally, three cases have been filed by the State Excise Department, contributing to a broader legal framework aimed at addressing the crisis.

Several key suspects have been apprehended, including Karnelsingh Virka, his son Gurmangatsingh Virka, and Radheshyam Prajapati. Investigators have stated that illicit liquor procured by Yogesh Ramchandra Vhankade was allegedly contaminated with methanol before it was distributed throughout Pune. This alarming situation has drawn considerable public scrutiny and concern regarding safety and regulatory oversight.

Public Tensions and Ongoing Investigations

In an unsettling turn, an elderly woman attempted to confront one of the suspects with a slipper, while another resident tried to throw a stone. The situation necessitated swift action from CID officials, who established a protective barrier to safely escort the suspects away from the enraged crowd. This episode highlights the community’s demand for justice and the complexities faced by law enforcement officials amid escalating tensions.

Authorities remain vigilant as they monitor the conditions of victims recovering in hospitals. Continued investigations are ongoing to verify reports of additional casualties resulting from the tainted liquor, and more suspects may face legal actions as the case develops further. The Pune hooch tragedy has thus opened discussions regarding public safety and regulatory enforcement in the affected areas.
