Publicity Stunt? ISF MLA Naushad Siddiqui Questions Motives Behind Mamata Banerjee’s Court Visit

The CSR Journal Magazine

Indian Secular Front (ISF) MLA Naushad Siddiqui has raised concerns over West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s recent visit to the Calcutta High Court, declaring it merely a publicity stunt. Siddiqui made these remarks on May 15, 2026, in Kolkata, in relation to a public interest litigation (PIL) concerning alleged post-poll violence in the state following the Assembly elections.

During his interaction with ANI, Siddiqui expressed his belief that the ruling party should prioritise visiting violence-affected areas rather than appearing in court. He remarked, “Going to court is just for show. They have 80 MLAs and 30 MPs. They should have at least gone to the spot.” He conveyed his disappointment with the government’s response to the ongoing situation.

Siddiqui also highlighted a recent incident where bulldozer action occurred in the Tousia area and emphasised the need for the government to be present at such locations instead of resorting to legal proceedings for publicity. He stated, “They showed up in court because this is their ‘safe zone’ and they will get publicity here too.”

Mamata Banerjee’s Appearance in High Court

On the same day, Mamata Banerjee appeared before the Calcutta High Court, donning a lawyer’s robe. Her appearance was linked to a PIL addressing the alleged violence that erupted after the 2026 State Assembly election outcomes. The case, submitted by advocate Sirsanya Banerjee, who is connected to the Trinamool Congress (TMC), claims various incidents of violence including attacks on party offices and the displacement of party workers.

Banerjee took the opportunity to present her party’s viewpoint during the court hearing before Chief Justice HC Sujoy Pal. Accompanying her was senior advocate Kalyan Banerjee, who is also a prominent figure in the TMC. The court proceedings further underscored the significance of the allegations surrounding post-poll violence in the state.

Following the court session, the Bar Council of India (BCI) took note of Banerjee’s legal attire and sought clarity from the West Bengal Bar Council regarding her enrolment and status as an advocate. This development added another layer to the scrutiny surrounding her court appearance.

Bar Council Sought Clarification on Legal Status

The BCI’s correspondence, dated May 14, addressed to the Secretary of the Bar Council of West Bengal, referred to her appearance in the legal garb consistent with advocates. According to the BCI, the Bar Council of India Rules establish standards for professional conduct, including the appropriate dress code for those representing clients in courts and tribunals.

This inquiry has prompted discussions about the legalities surrounding Banerjee’s actions, especially considering her previous role as Chief Minister and current involvement in the ongoing legal matters. The implications of her court appearance may extend beyond this particular case, highlighting potential issues concerning the intersection of politics and legal procedures.

The unfolding situation in West Bengal remains critical as allegations of political violence continue to stir public discourse. As both the judiciary and legislative branches engage with these challenges, the attention on Mamata Banerjee and her administration’s responses will likely persist in the public eye.
