Priyanka Gandhi Criticises Government’s Accountability over Student Protests

The CSR Journal Magazine

Congress Member of Parliament Priyanka Gandhi Vadra questioned the government’s lack of accountability regarding police actions against student protesters, particularly in relation to the demands for a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah during parliamentary sessions. She expressed her concern that the opposition’s requests for clarification had gone unaddressed, which she argued indicated a disconnection between the government and the public.

Gandhi highlighted that young demonstrators had gathered not only in Delhi but across various regions of India, facing aggression from law enforcement. She emphasised the scale of the protests, asserting that the youth demonstrated in many cities where they were met with force, including alleged beatings and firing. Her critique suggested that the government should provide an explanation for the police’s actions during these incidents.

Further comments from Gandhi referenced the use of tear gas and the alleged deployment of pellet guns against protesters, asserting that such measures were excessive. Notably, she alleged that an AK-47 had been used against demonstrators in Bihar, raising questions about the measures taken by law enforcement during the protests.

Opposition’s Ongoing Demands for Government Response

The growing demands from the Opposition were for the government to openly address the measures taken during the protests and provide a thorough explanation. While the Opposition has repeatedly called for discussions in Parliament regarding these concerns, the government has asserted its willingness to engage in dialogue. The ongoing tensions reflect a larger struggle over parliamentary procedures and accountability in governance.

In spite of the government’s assertion to discuss issues, the Opposition claims their requests are being ignored. Priyanka Gandhi’s comments seemed to echo broader frustrations within the political landscape, with continued pressure on the government to engage transparently about the treatment of protesters. This situation has contributed to significant unrest among political factions, complicating parliamentary proceedings.

Meanwhile, Gandhi also pointed out that the issue of police actions during protests necessitates serious scrutiny. She urged the government to recognise the gravity of the situation and to address the concerns of the students and the public. The discourse around police accountability is crucial in fostering trust between the government and citizens, something that has reportedly been lacking.

Discussion on Ram Temple Donations and Government Position

In addition to her remarks on the protests, Priyanka Gandhi addressed the controversial topic of funds raised for the construction of the Ram temple. She questioned the government’s stance on the contributions amassed nationwide, articulating that citizens contributed with firm belief in the project, extending to those from the Indian diaspora in countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand.

Gandhi contested the assertion that matters regarding the temple were now solely under the purview of the state government, challenging the notion that the issue could be sidelined during electoral campaigns. She referenced instances where the temple’s significance was emphasised during elections, making the case that the government could no longer selectively engage in such matters.

Adding to her argument, she noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s inauguration of the temple underscored its national importance, which had drawn widespread attention and participation from citizens. This issue has further muddied the waters of political accountability, especially in light of the ongoing parliamentary debates that appear to be tangled in contrasting interests.
