The West Bengal government has appointed four new members to the West Bengal Central School Service Commission (WBSSC), including three senior monks from the Ramakrishna Mission and a professor from IIM Calcutta, in a move aimed at strengthening the commission’s functioning and expediting long-pending recruitment processes.

According to a notification issued by the state government on Tuesday, the appointments were made under the special powers vested in the Governor under Section 3(4) of the West Bengal School Service Commission Act, 1997.

The four new members will assume office immediately and continue in their positions until further orders.

The appointees are:

Swami Atmapriyananda, Pro-Chancellor and Secretary of the Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Educational and Research Institute (RKMVERI).

Swami Shastrajnananda, Secretary of the Narendrapur Ramakrishna Mission Ashram.

Swami Tattvasarananda, trustee of Belur Math, member of the Ramakrishna Mission’s Governing Body and Secretary of the Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture at Golpark.

Ramya Tarakada Venkateswaran, professor in the Strategic Management group at IIM Calcutta.

The appointments come at a time when the School Service Commission is under pressure to accelerate several recruitment exercises that have remained pending for years.

Uncertainty over Class XI-XII recommendation letters

SSC Chairman Dushyant Nariala on Tuesday provided an update on the commission’s recruitment activities.

Recommendation letters for the recruitment of teachers for Classes XI and XII are scheduled to be handed over on August 14. However, Nariala indicated that there was some uncertainty over whether the distribution would take place on the scheduled date.

He nevertheless said the commission was making every effort to complete the process as quickly as possible.

Naraila said all recruitment would be conducted strictly in accordance with the commission’s prescribed guidelines.

15,000 candidates complete verification

Under the 2025 recruitment drive, document verification has so far been completed for around 15,000 of approximately 39,000 candidates, with the remaining verification work progressing.

The scale of the exercise makes the recruitment process one of the commission’s major immediate priorities as it works to clear the backlog.

The commission has also completed the recruitment process for 1,177 pending Upper Primary posts dating back to 2016, the chairman said.

In another development, the necessary recruitment letters for 308 special education teacher posts have already been issued.

The latest developments are significant for the commission as it seeks to restore institutional momentum and address recruitment-related delays.

Focus on transparency and institutional functioning

The induction of the four new members comes at a critical stage for the WBCSSC. Their appointment, alongside the ongoing recruitment exercises, is expected to strengthen the commission’s functioning as authorities work towards completing pending appointments.

With thousands of candidates awaiting progress in different recruitment processes, the immediate challenge before the commission will be to maintain procedural compliance while accelerating the disposal of pending cases.

The government’s latest move, therefore, comes with a dual objective: strengthening the commission’s institutional functioning and ensuring that long-delayed teacher recruitment moves towards completion.
