Prime Minister Modi Launches Rs 4,400 Crore Projects in Tamil Nadu

On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the central government’s aim of fostering a developed Tamil Nadu as part of a broader vision for a developed India. During a speech inaugurating infrastructure projects totaling over Rs 4,400 crore, he expressed that this collective mission is an inspiration for all Indians, aiming for a fully developed nation by the year 2047. He assured attendees of the government’s unwavering commitment to enable inclusive development and to support Tamil Nadu’s progress.

Heritage and Eco-Tourism Initiatives

Highlighting Tamil Nadu’s rich historical background, Modi announced plans to enhance places like Adichanallur into global heritage sites. He also mentioned ecotourism projects around Lake Pulicat and Podhigai Malai, which are expected to generate new employment opportunities while preserving the state’s natural ecosystems. His honor of being in the historic city of Madurai was evident as he paid respects at local temples.

Infrastructure Investments and Transformations

The Prime Minister noted that the recent projects would substantially improve connectivity, stimulate the economy, and significantly impact the lives of countless individuals. He pointed out that since 2014, the government has made considerable investments in Tamil Nadu’s highway infrastructure, with over 4,000 kilometers of highways constructed in the state. He praised the advancements in railway infrastructure, stating that the Indian Railways has undergone significant improvements in the last decade, becoming more modern and user-friendly, particularly within Tamil Nadu.

Railway Budget Highlights

Modi remarked on the marked increase in railway budget allocations for Tamil Nadu, which have grown nearly nine times since 2014. He provided statistical insights to illustrate this growth, noting that the average annual railway funding during the period from 2009 to 2014 was approximately Rs 880 crore. In contrast, he mentioned that the allocation for 2026-27 is set at Rs 7,600 crore. Notably, he cited the introduction of nine Vande Bharat trains and nine Amrit Bharat trains, which have greatly benefited the population, with their coaches manufactured at the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai.

Upcoming Bullet Train Corridors

The PM drew attention to the threefold increase in infrastructure funding for Tamil Nadu as compared to the previous decade, with the latest budget continuing this trend. He introduced plans for high-speed rail corridors connecting Bengaluru-Chennai and Chennai-Hyderabad, stating these projects will significantly impact the regional economy. Additional infrastructure developments included the laying of foundation stones for the four-laning of key national highways as well as the inauguration of several revamped railway stations.

Enhancing Broadcasting Services

Modi also launched three new Akashvani FM relay transmitters located in Kumbakonam, Yercaud, and Vellore, aiming to improve broadcasting services across Tamil Nadu. These transmitters are expected to enhance regional coverage and ensure uninterrupted access to public broadcasting for multiple districts throughout the state.

Visit to Arulmigu Subrahmanya Swamy Temple

Later in the day, Modi visited the renowned Arulmigu Subrahmanya Swamy Temple in Tirupparankundram, where he received traditional honors. Dressed in a dhoti and kurta, he participated in the temple rituals and paid homage to the deity. His visit, which occurred under tight security, was preceded by a notable controversy regarding a religious demand that had previously escalated to legal proceedings.
