Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his Independence Day speech from the Red Fort on August 15, 2026, emphasised the swift growth of India’s higher education sector. He made a comparison between the landscape of higher education prior to 2014 and its current state, noting that fewer than 350 universities existed in India between 2004 and 2014. Modi stated that nearly 650 new universities have been established in just over a decade, bringing the total number close to 1,000.

This significant expansion is framed as a part of the government’s efforts to increase educational opportunities for the youth of India and to enhance the country’s educational infrastructure, facilitating better access to higher learning.

Increasing Medical Colleges and Foreign Degrees

During his address, Modi also noted the rising number of medical colleges across the nation. According to his statements, the number has nearly doubled since 2014, with approximately 850 medical colleges now in operation compared to around 400 a decade ago. This expansion aims to provide more educational options for aspiring medical professionals in the country.

The Prime Minister also highlighted the growing presence of foreign universities in India, announcing that arrangements have been made for Indian students to pursue foreign degrees without leaving the country. He remarked that these institutions are establishing operations in India, allowing students to earn international qualifications locally.

These initiatives represent a broader strategy to build a more robust educational framework and to empower Indian youth, as the country aspires to achieve developed nation status.

Linking Education with Innovation and Technology

Modi discussed the connection between the growth of higher education and the country’s emerging focus on technology and innovation. He pointed out that over 10,000 Atal Tinkering Labs have been set up to foster innovation and technology among children from an early age. These labs aim to cultivate curiosity and creativity, providing a foundation for future advancements.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister mentioned the remarkable rise in registered startups, indicating that India now has over 2.5 lakh active startups. This surge reflects the entrepreneurial spirit among the youth, contributing to both economic growth and job creation.

In connection with technological developments, Modi announced an ambitious initiative to train one crore young individuals in artificial intelligence skills within the next year. He stated that the goal is to equip Indian youth with the knowledge and capabilities to excel in the evolving AI industry globally.

Such initiatives highlight the government’s commitment to integrating education with modern technological advancements, ultimately aiming to prepare a generation that can compete on an international scale.
