Preity Zinta Seeks Legal Action Over Unauthorised AI-Generated Content

The CSR Journal Magazine

Actor Preity Zinta has approached the Bombay High Court seeking legal action against several entities, including Google LLC, Meta Platforms and other websites, over the alleged creation and circulation of AI-generated deepfakes and manipulated digital content featuring her.

The High Court has granted the actor permission to file a substantive civil suit, allowing her to pursue claims relating to the alleged infringement of her personality rights, copyrights and professional reputation. The matter is expected to proceed through the legal process in the coming weeks.

Actor Alleges Unauthorised Use of Identity

According to submissions made before the court, Zinta alleged that multiple platforms and websites had created, uploaded and distributed deepfake videos, altered images, memes, AI-generated chatbot personas and other digital content using her identity without authorisation.

Advocate Rohan Kadam, appearing for the actor, informed a single-judge bench of Justice Abhay Ahuja on June 16 that the material had been made accessible to the public across various online platforms.

The actor argued that the circulation of such content amounted to an infringement of her legal rights and adversely affected her public image.

Plea Raises Concerns Over Reputation and Goodwill

In her petition, Zinta stated that the dissemination of manipulated content had damaged her goodwill, reputation and persona.

The suit further alleged that the unauthorised use of her identity constituted a violation of her moral rights under the Copyright Act.

Kadam submitted that the disputed material had been circulated globally through digital platforms, making its impact widespread and far-reaching.

High Court Grants Leave to Institute Suit

Although several respondents are located outside Mumbai and some of the alleged activities took place beyond the city’s territorial jurisdiction, the actor sought the court’s permission to institute proceedings before the Bombay High Court.

The court subsequently granted leave to file the suit, paving the way for substantive proceedings against the entities named in the petition.

With the court permitting the filing of the suit, the case is expected to move forward in the coming weeks as the parties pursue their claims through the judicial process.
