India and Slovakia on Monday announced 14 major outcomes during PM Modi’s State Visit to Slovakia, including the elevation of bilateral ties to a Comprehensive Partnership and a series of agreements spanning defence, digital technology, higher education, labour mobility and scientific cooperation.

The announcement followed PM Modi’s meeting with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico in Bratislava and marked the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Slovakia since the country’s independence in 1993.

Describing the development as a “very special moment”, PM Modi said the decision reflected the growing depth of cooperation between the two countries across multiple sectors.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), India and Slovakia agreed to establish a Joint Working Group on Counter Terrorism and launch a Consular Dialogue mechanism to strengthen cooperation in consular affairs.

The two countries also signed a Memorandum of Understanding on labour migration aimed at facilitating the movement of skilled professionals and workers.

In the defence sector, both sides signed a Letter of Intent to promote collaboration between defence industries and advance joint development and production initiatives.

The visit also saw the signing of agreements on digital technologies, higher education and research, and audio-visual creation.

An MoU on quantum communication and critical infrastructure protection highlighted the growing focus on emerging technologies.

PM Modi said technology would serve as a key pillar of the bilateral partnership.

“We view technology as a key pillar of the India-Slovakia partnership. The MoU on digital technology will open many new areas of cooperation. We will also work closely in AI and space,” he said.

A significant outcome of the visit was the establishment of the first Indian Council for Cultural Relations Chair in Artificial Intelligence at the Technical University of Kosice.

In the healthcare sector, the National Institute of Naturopathy in Pune signed an agreement with Slovak Health Spa Piestany to promote cooperation in wellness and traditional healthcare systems.

Academic ties were strengthened through an agreement between IIT Delhi and the Slovak Technical University, covering student exchanges, scholarships and joint research.

Scientific collaboration also received a boost with an agreement between the Indian National Science Academy and the Slovak Academy of Sciences.

Both countries further expanded cooperation in tourism through an agreement between their respective tour operators’ associations.

PM Modi also met Slovak President Peter Pellegrini at the Presidential Palace, where the two leaders discussed cooperation in digitalisation, innovation, defence, space, nuclear energy and education.

The leaders viewed a painting exhibition dedicated to Varanasi, featuring works by Slovak artists inspired by the ancient city and paintings created by children based on stories from the Panchatantra and Jataka tales.

“It is gladdening to see Indian art and culture become popular globally,” PM Modi said.

During the visit, PM Modi and Prime Minister Fico laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Bratislava in honour of Slovak soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the country’s freedom.

The Prime Minister also interacted with leading Slovak business figures and invited companies to expand investment and manufacturing partnerships with India.
