The CSR Journal Magazine

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on a significant tour of Indonesia, Australia, and New Zealand from July 6 to 11. This visit aims to enhance India’s engagement with these nations, as confirmed by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). The journey will begin in Indonesia and proceed to Australia, where most of Modi’s key activities will take place in Melbourne.

After concluding his engagements in Australia, Modi will travel to New Zealand, marking a notable point in his itinerary as it will be the first visit by an Indian prime minister to the country in nearly 40 years. This aspect has been highlighted by MEA Secretary (East) Rudrendra Tandon, who spoke to reporters regarding the importance of this leg of the trip.

Significance of New Zealand Visit

The forthcoming visit to New Zealand is particularly significant due to the extended gap since the last official trip by an Indian prime minister. New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon recently announced this visit through a social media statement, expressing his excitement about Modi’s inaugural trip to the country. While he did not specify the exact date, he confirmed the visit will happen next week.

Luxon emphasised the importance of India as one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing economies, pointing out its critical role in New Zealand’s economic future. He stated that India is of tremendous value to New Zealand, especially in the context of the recently signed New Zealand-India Free Trade Agreement (FTA), intended to bolster economic connections between the two countries.

He reiterated that the FTA, signed in April, would create new job opportunities, increase exports, and stimulate economic growth for New Zealand. Luxon also mentioned that this agreement opens up access to a market of 1.4 billion people for New Zealand’s goods and services, ultimately benefiting Kiwi communities by creating jobs and raising wages.

Impact on Bilateral Relations

The Free Trade Agreement aims to enhance two-way trade in goods and services while promoting investment between India and New Zealand. The significance of PM Modi’s three-nation visit cannot be understated as it aims to deepen bilateral ties and create a platform for more comprehensive cooperation in various sectors.

Modi’s engagements are expected to include discussions on trade, investment, and collaborative projects aimed at elevating the partnership between India and each of the visited nations. The tour is anticipated to set a new paradigm in diplomatic relations, marked by a focus on mutual economic growth and cooperation.

The visit comes at a time when India is keen on expanding its influence and participation in the Asia-Pacific region. Strengthening ties with Australia and New Zealand aligns with broader strategic objectives as India seeks to enhance partnerships in trade, security, and cultural exchanges.
