PM Modi Issues El Nino Warning and Calls for Water Conservation

The CSR Journal Magazine

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has raised concerns regarding the emerging El Nino conditions, urging states to enhance their water conservation strategies. During the 11th Governing Council Meeting of NITI Aayog, which took place on June 12, 2026, Modi called for a unified national approach to address climate-related challenges. The day-long meeting was attended by representatives from all 28 states and five Union Territories.

Modi underscored the significant impact that climate variability could have on agriculture, water resources, and livelihoods. He emphasised the need for preparedness and sustainable management of resources to counter these looming challenges. According to an official communiqué, the Prime Minister specifically pointed to the potential repercussions of El Nino on weather patterns, urging states to prioritise water conservation initiatives.

Understanding El Nino’s Impact on Indian Weather

El Nino is characterised by periodic warming of the waters in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean, which typically correlates with diminished monsoon rains in India. The World Meteorological Organisation has indicated that an El Nino event is likely to develop from mid-2026, affecting global weather dynamics. This phenomenon is known to disrupt the southwest monsoon by weakening the moisture-laden winds that are essential for bringing widespread rain to India.

Current data from Japan’s meteorological authorities suggests that sea surface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific remain above average, signalling the onset of El Nino conditions. These conditions are forecasted to persist through the autumn season in the Northern Hemisphere. For India, the consequences often include reduced monsoon rainfall, extended heatwaves, and heightened drought risks.

Experts worldwide are vigilantly tracking the development of El Nino, given its extensive influence on rainfall patterns across various regions. Modi’s warnings come at a crucial moment as weather monitoring indicates the potential implications of this climate phenomenon.

Focus on Development and Technological Advancement

The Prime Minister’s warnings about climate risks were part of a broader agenda aimed at constructing a developed India, referred to as “Viksit Bharat,” which relies on cooperative federalism and strategic long-term planning. Modi affirmed that despite economic uncertainties affecting many major global economies, India’s growth trajectory remains an inspiration on the world stage.

He urged states to bolster the nation’s path towards self-reliance by incorporating global best practices, particularly in renewable energy and emerging technologies. In his address, the Prime Minister highlighted artificial intelligence as an opportunity for advancement, presenting it as a transformative force for society.

While acknowledging the benefits of technological innovation, Modi also stressed the necessity for safeguards against emerging social issues such as cyber fraud and drug abuse. He called upon states to invest in skill development initiatives to ensure that India’s youth can effectively tap into the opportunities generated by these new technologies.
