The Deendayal Port Authority in Kandla, Gujarat, has set a benchmark for efficiency in handling fertiliser cargo this season. The Port has allocated two specific berths exclusively for fertiliser vessels, which has streamlined the docking process. Ships are now berthed based on their seniority, resulting in enhanced operational smoothness and shorter waiting times.

Following the establishment of newly constructed warehouses, the Port has seen a significant increase in storage capacity. This expansion is critical for effective cargo management as it helps mitigate congestion issues that could disrupt operations.

Support from the Railway authorities has been instrumental, as they have provided adequate rakes to facilitate the evacuation of cargo. Currently, the port consistently achieves the loading of approximately 4.5 rakes per day, which aligns with its operational handling capacity.

Collaboration Ensures Smooth Operations

The successful operations at Deendayal Port are the result of a collaborative approach among various stakeholders. The joint efforts of the Port Authority, Railways, shipping agents, stevedores, and other involved parties have contributed to a seamless fertiliser handling process and timely evacuation of shipments.

This efficiency brings benefits not only to importers and farmers but also enhances the overall supply chain dynamics. By ensuring swift movement of fertiliser cargo, the port supports agricultural practices and food production in the region.

Under the leadership of Sushil Kumar Singh, IRSME, the Chairman of the Deendayal Port Authority, numerous initiatives have been pursued to enhance operational efficiency further. Key focuses have included reducing the turnaround time for vessels and facilitating uninterrupted cargo movement.

Minister Reviews Port Performance and Future Plans

On July 18, 2023, Minister of State for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Shantanu Thakur conducted a comprehensive review of the operational efficiency at Deendayal Port. His visit included an evaluation of ongoing infrastructure projects, capacity enhancement measures, and the transition to green energy initiatives within the Port Authority.

During his inspection, he recognised the Port’s milestone achievement of surpassing the 50 million metric tonne (MMT) cargo handling threshold more rapidly than any other major port authority in the current financial year. The minister commended the contributions of the port administration, staff, and stakeholders while expressing optimism for the establishment of new records in cargo handling and sustainable practices moving forward.

The review meeting was attended by several key officials, including DPA Chairman Sushil Kumar Singh, Deputy Chairman Nilabhra Dasgupta, and various department heads. Local politicians, including Kutch MP Vinodbhai Chavda, MLA Maltiben Maheshwari, and Gandhidham Mayor Divyaben Nathani, also engaged in discussions about the port’s ongoing development and future strategy.
