Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) celebrated its 57th Foundation Day with a variety of events highlighting advancements in higher education. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu inaugurated several infrastructure projects and announced Rs 5 crore to support the introduction of technology-oriented courses, including a BTech in Artificial Intelligence (AI). He emphasised the importance of AI and other advanced technologies for the future.

During his address, Sukhu reflected on his time as a student at HPU, noting the institution’s role in shaping many successful careers in politics and other fields. He described the university as a foundation for leadership and public service and expressed the state’s commitment to advancing education through innovative policies.

In addition to the new academic offerings, the Chief Minister laid the foundation stones for a new academic building and a digital library. His announcements also included plans for enhanced English-medium education and the establishment of 150 CBSE-pattern government schools, with over 24,000 students already enrolled.

Focus On Research And Technological Advancements

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Mahavir Singh elaborated on the university’s strategic plan aimed at enhancing its research capabilities. He highlighted the recent establishment of a Computer-Based Test (CBT) Laboratory for online examinations and Centres of Excellence dedicated to various fields such as AI, data science, and green energy.

Prof. Singh mentioned that all 55 teaching departments would collaborate with these centres, allowing for a significant upsurge in research activities. The university has secured around Rs 30 crore in research projects focused on green energy and anticipates further funding through partnerships, estimating collaborations worth roughly Rs 10 crore with ARTRAC in the cyber domain.

Highlighting the ongoing efforts to improve research output, Prof. Singh announced the release of pending pension arrears for certain retired employees and various initiatives designed to promote interdisciplinary studies and support college teachers with PhD supervision rights.

Celebrations And Cultural Events Conclude The Day

The celebrations were marked by sessions that recognised distinguished contributors to various fields. Eminent figures, including Dr Raj Bahadur and Dr Vijay Kumar Stokes, received Citations of Honour for their substantial contributions in medicine and engineering, respectively. The university also recognised outstanding non-teaching staff, highlighting their valuable services.

State Governor and Chancellor Kavinder Gupta presided over another session, praising HPU for its academic legacy and commitment to implementing the National Education Policy 2020. Gupta urged the importance of nurturing social responsibility among students and integrating traditional knowledge with modern education.

The day closed with a cultural evening that featured lectures on Himachali traditions and performances reflecting the region’s rich heritage. Notable speakers included Padma Vidyanand Saraik, and cultural presentations engaged attendees, reinforcing the university’s commitment to academic and cultural excellence.

The festivities were attended by a wide array of individuals, including Shimla Mayor Surinder Chauhan, university officials, faculty, and numerous distinguished guests. The event concluded with the National Anthem, reaffirming HPU’s dedication to research, innovation, and comprehensive development in the educational sector.
