Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently visited flood-affected regions in Charaideo, Sivasagar, and Jorhat districts to assess the current situation. The visit aimed to evaluate ongoing relief operations and provide assurance to those impacted by the floods. He commenced his tour in Charaideo, where he inspected specific locations, including the Dhole Bagan Higher Secondary School and the Sonari Town Primary School, both serving as relief camps.

During his visit, Sarma interacted with families living in the camps, seeking to grasp the difficulties they face following the flooding. He expressed the Government’s commitment to extending all necessary assistance until normal conditions are restored in the affected areas. The flood situation in Charaideo has severely affected over two lakh residents across 292 villages, prompting the district administration to establish eight relief camps along with 71 distribution centres for essential supplies.

Currently, the Dhole Bagan camp houses 147 individuals, while 210 people are sheltered at the Sonari Town Primary School. Chief Minister Sarma acknowledged the facilities available at these camps and confirmed that medical care and other essential services are being provided to the displaced individuals.

Ongoing Operations in Sivasagar District

Following his visit to Charaideo, Chief Minister Sarma proceeded to the Nazira region in Sivasagar district. There, he assessed the flood situation and examined the ongoing rescue efforts being conducted by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF). He visited the Santak Tea Estate relief camp, where he interacted with affected families and reiterated the Government’s commitment to helping reconstruct damaged homes and restore normalcy in the area.

Sarma also conducted a speedboat survey in the flood-affected Betbari region to better understand the impact of the floods. He stated that the State Government has already disbursed immediate ex-gratia assistance of Rs 4 lakh to the relatives of individuals who lost their lives due to the recent flooding events. Emphasising the urgency of the rescue operations, he directed district authorities to ensure that all stranded individuals are accounted for and provided with adequate relief supplies.

During his visit to the relief camp at 398 No. Phukan Nagar Primary School, the Chief Minister instructed officials to ensure an uninterrupted supply of safe drinking water, medical supplies, and other essential items. He also urged that the specific needs of children, pregnant women, and elderly individuals be prioritised by the administration.

Assessment of Flood Conditions in Jorhat District

Currently, a total of 246 individuals from two flood-stricken villages are receiving shelter in these camps. The Chief Minister also inspected areas along the Bhogdoi River, particularly the Borigaon locality, where he assessed the damage caused by the floods and inspected the breached Sholmora-Bhogdoi embankment.

Assuring the affected residents of the Government’s support, Sarma emphasised that all efforts are being made to ensure that no family displaced by the floods is left without the necessary aid and resources. The assurance from the Chief Minister reflects the administration’s ongoing commitment to address the needs of those significantly impacted by the recent natural disaster.
