PM Modi Emphasises Women’s Reservation Bill as National Sentiment

The CSR Journal Magazine

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reiterated the importance of implementing the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, which provides for 33 per cent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. Addressing a public gathering in Dehradun, Mr Modi stated that the realisation of this legislation should occur before the 2029 elections. He described this move as reflecting the collective sentiment of the nation and an embodiment of women’s empowerment.

During his address, the Prime Minister called on all political parties to lend their support to the proposed amendment. He expressed his belief that, by the time of the next Lok Sabha elections, women would have significantly increased representation and enhanced rights within legislative bodies.

The Parliament is scheduled to conduct a special session on April 16, 17, and 18 to deliberate on amendments to the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, 2023, as well as a Delimitation Bill aimed at facilitating the one-third reservation for women legislators.

Political Unity Requested for Implementation

PM Modi underscored the historical significance of passing the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam after a wait of four decades and noted the importance of timely implementation. He urged all political factions to unite in their efforts towards advancing the rights of women in the country. “In homage to this resolve of maternal power,” he stated, “a special discussion has been scheduled in Parliament.” He called for a unanimous agreement across political parties to facilitate the realisation of this goal.

In an effort to galvanise public support, the Prime Minister disclosed that he had penned a letter to women across India, inviting them to engage actively in the ongoing discussions related to the women’s reservation. He expressed confidence that they would respond positively to this call for participation.

Mr Modi reiterated his commitment to ensuring that, by 2029, women would receive equal rights representing 50 per cent of the population. He emphasised that this initiative should move forward without delays and with broad political backing.

Development Initiatives in Uttarakhand Highlighted

Alongside discussions on women’s rights, PM Modi inaugurated the six-lane Delhi-Dehradun Economic Corridor in Uttarakhand, highlighting its potential to enhance trade and industrial growth within the region. He referred to such projects as “new doors of progress,” indicating their role in fostering improved connectivity and opportunities for local communities.

During his speech, the Prime Minister noted previous challenges faced by villagers in Uttarakhand regarding road access, stating that the current government, dubbed the “double-engine government,” has made significant improvements in rural infrastructure. He remarked on the transformation of isolated villages and the renewed vitality seen in these areas due to enhanced connectivity.

PM Modi also pointed out the substantial infrastructure investments made over the past decade, citing figures that indicated an increase in overall spending prior to 2014. He mentioned that significant funding has been directed towards development projects specifically addressing the needs of Uttarakhand.

Lastly, PM Modi spoke about the upcoming Kumbh Mela in Haridwar, emphasising the importance of preserving the sanctity of spiritual sites. He urged the public to keep pilgrimage locations clean, stressing the need for a divine and grand event. The Prime Minister called for collective efforts to ensure that debris and waste do not detract from the sacred atmosphere, ensuring a respectful and memorable occasion for all attendees.
