Prime Minister Narendra Modi commemorated the 135th birth anniversary of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar on April 14, 2023, by paying heartfelt tributes during an event in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. He highlighted the government’s achievements over the past decade, particularly regarding constitutional reforms aimed at enhancing the dignity of the Constitution. Notably, he referenced the abrogation of Article 370, which officially extended the Indian Constitution’s applicability to Jammu and Kashmir.

Inauguration of the Delhi-Dehradun Economic Corridor

During the ceremony, PM Modi inaugurated the six-lane Delhi-Dehradun Economic Corridor, a crucial infrastructure project aimed at improving connectivity within the region. He expressed regret for arriving late, attributing the delay to a lengthy roadshow spanning 12 kilometres that showcased significant public engagement. Modi stated that the enthusiastic crowd reflected the affection and support from locals, which inspired him for future initiatives.

The Prime Minister noted, “This corridor will not only propel Uttarakhand’s progress but also enhance overall connectivity,” indicating its potential to transform travel experiences in the region. He specified that the new corridor would reduce travel time between Delhi and Dehradun from over six hours to approximately two and a half hours, signalling a major advancement in regional infrastructure.

The Delhi-Dehradun Economic Corridor, a significant development project, was built at a cost exceeding Rs 12,000 crore. Spanning 213 kilometres, it traverses Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, positioning the area for economic growth and increased accessibility.

Advocating for Uniform Civil Code

Modi also emphasised the importance of the Uniform Civil Code, a policy that aims to provide equal rights to all citizens irrespective of their religion. He acknowledged Uttarakhand’s pioneering role as the first state in India to implement this code, fulfilling a longstanding commitment of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He reiterated that Babasaheb Ambedkar was a strong proponent of social justice, and the current government seeks to uphold these ideals through development initiatives.

Reflecting on Ambedkar’s legacy, PM Modi stated, “Babasaheb spent his life advocating for the rights of the oppressed and marginalised, a mission our government continues to pursue.” He portrayed the government’s infrastructure projects and policies as a means to realise this vision, driving advancements in social equity.

The Prime Minister concluded by extending greetings for the various festivals observed during this period, including Baisakhi, Puthandu, and Bohag Bihu. He also acknowledged the upcoming pilgrimage seasons at the sacred sites of Badrinath and Kedarnath, expressing his intent to strengthen spiritual tourism in the state.
