PICCADILLY CIRCUS, LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM - 2021/10/01: Colombe Cahen-Salvador (R), human rights activist, was seen holding the East Turkestan Flag, along with the sign that says 'Millions of Uyghurs in Camps' during the demonstration.
On October 1st, various anti-China Diasporas in London came together in solidarity against the Chinese Communist Party. Jointly held by Hong Kong Liberty, World Uyghur Congress, Free Tibet and more, speeches were given at Piccadilly Circus to condemn the human rights violations by the CCP. The protestors later marched to the Chinese Embassy in London, where the Chinese National Flag was burnt. (Photo by Belinda Jiao/SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images)
The World Uyghur Congress (WUC) and the Uyghur Centre for Democracy and Human Rights (UZDM) have issued a strong condemnation of recent phishing attacks and impersonation attempts aimed at their organisations and prominent Uyghur leaders. This campaign reportedly involves malicious communications, including slander and fraudulent claims of affiliation with these groups. According to a press release from the WUC, several individuals have attempted to deceive supporters and sabotage advocacy efforts by falsely representing themselves as members of the WUC.
In particular, the organisations have warned their partners and supporters to avoid engaging with anyone using the name “Bay Zolla” or the email address [email protected]. This individual has allegedly posed as an official WUC staff member, despite lacking any legitimate connection to the organisation. The WUC has clarified that all authentic staff members are publicly available on its official website, encouraging individuals to verify the authenticity of any communications they receive.
Concerns Ahead of International Uyghur Forum 2026
The recent developments occur in the lead-up to the International Uyghur Forum (IUF 2026), which is being co-organised by the WUC and UZDM. The forum is poised to commemorate ten years since the Chinese government’s mass internment of Uyghurs and other Turkic communities in East Turkistan. This gathering aims to bolster international efforts aimed at accountability and global action regarding alleged human rights violations against these communities.
As the organisations prepare for this significant event, they have expressed concern over the timing and coordinated nature of the phishing attacks. The WUC and UZDM noted that these attempts seem strategically designed to sow confusion, intimidate participants, and disrupt international cooperation surrounding IUF 2026. Such actions could hinder efforts to address ongoing human rights abuses and diminish the impact of their advocacy efforts.
In light of these challenges, the WUC and UZDM committed to actively monitoring and documenting all suspicious activities. They firmly emphasised that despite the attempts to undermine their work, they remain resolute in amplifying Uyghur voices and advocating for global solidarity and accountability. The organisations reiterated their commitment to standing against cyber harassment and misinformation campaigns.
Secure Communication Practices Urged by Uyghur Organisations
The WUC and UZDM have urged the recipients of any dubious communications to exercise caution. They advised individuals to authenticate messages through official channels before sharing sensitive information. This recommendation seeks to prevent the potential fallout that could arise from disinformation, as well as to protect the integrity of legitimate advocacy efforts.
The press release underscored the importance of maintaining clear and secure lines of communication, especially as IUF 2026 approaches. The organisations expressed their determination to counteract these malicious efforts, asserting that such tactics will not succeed in silencing their advocacy for human rights and justice. Emphasising unity and resilience, the WUC and UZDM aim to ensure that their mission continues unimpeded.
In summary, the World Uyghur Congress and the Uyghur Centre for Democracy and Human Rights are facing a concerted effort to disrupt their advocacy through cyber attacks. They remain vigilant and committed to defending their rights and promoting awareness of human rights violations against the Uyghur community as they prepare for the upcoming forum.
