The United States on Thursday resumed air strikes on targets inside Iran, ending a brief pause in military operations after Tehran launched ballistic missiles towards a US military facility in Jordan earlier this week. The renewed action marks another escalation in tensions between Washington and Tehran despite ongoing diplomatic contacts.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) said all incoming Iranian missiles were successfully intercepted, preventing damage to the targeted American installation.

US Renews Air Campaign

According to reports, the latest air strikes came after Iran launched what CENTCOM described as an “attempted surprise attack” against American military assets in the Middle East.

While the US military did not identify the targeted base, American media reports said the missiles were aimed at a US military installation in Jordan.

CENTCOM said the missiles were launched from Iranian territory and that all projectiles were intercepted before reaching their target.

The missile barrage marked Iran’s first direct ballistic missile attack on a US military facility since Washington paused its air campaign to allow space for diplomatic efforts.

Trump Warns of Strong Response

US President Donald Trump issued a strong warning following the Iranian missile attack, saying the United States would respond decisively to any aggression against its forces.

Speaking to Fox News, Trump said Washington would retaliate forcefully against attacks targeting American personnel in the region.

Earlier this week, Trump had expressed optimism about diplomatic engagement with Iran, saying talks were progressing positively while warning that military operations would resume if negotiations failed.

Joint US-Saudi Operation in Iraq

The renewed strikes on Iran came alongside joint air operations by the United States and Saudi Arabia targeting Iran-backed militia groups in Iraq.

According to CENTCOM, the operation targeted logistics facilities and weapons storage sites in eastern Iraq following more than 30 drone attacks over three days by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) against US troops and Saudi energy infrastructure.

The Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF) said at least 20 people were killed in the strikes.

Saudi authorities also said their air defence systems intercepted several drones targeting oil facilities in the country’s Eastern Province, attributing the attacks to Iran-backed armed groups operating from Iraq.

Diplomatic Efforts Continue

The latest military action follows the temporary suspension of the US air campaign last week, when American officials said operations had been paused to assess strategic conditions and create an opportunity for diplomacy.

Despite the renewed strikes, indirect communication between Washington and Tehran continues through regional intermediaries.

The escalation also comes shortly after President Trump met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House, where the two leaders discussed regional security and developments concerning Iran. The White House described the talks as “positive and productive”.
