Pakistan’s Sindh Government Imposes Ban on Wheat Movement Amid Rising Prices

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Sindh government has implemented a ban on the inter-provincial movement of wheat, aiming to protect food supplies and ensure price stability within the province. This decision was reported following a cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah on May 22. Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon explained that the ban was prompted by escalating wheat prices and worries about the availability of the commodity in local markets.

During the briefing, Memon detailed additional reforms and developmental initiatives approved by the cabinet, which encompass various sectors such as health, education, transport, governance, and infrastructure. The aim is to create a more stable economic environment in Sindh.

Financial Allocations for Development Initiatives

The cabinet has sanctioned financial allocations to support several development schemes in the region. An amount of PKR 338.8 million has been earmarked for projects in Sukkur, alongside PKR 916.14 million designated for food and dietary needs in jails across the province. These allocations reflect the government’s commitment to improving local infrastructure and welfare services.

Among the approved projects in Sukkur is the improvement of the Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Wellness and Recreational Park, and the setup of a women’s block at the Mir Masoom Shah Library. Such initiatives are intended to enhance community resources and promote gender inclusivity in public spaces.

Furthermore, significant healthcare reforms were authorised, including the introduction of the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre and National Institute of Child Health Operations and Management Act, 2025. This legal framework aims to refine recruitment processes and ensure better accountability, thereby improving the efficiency of health services in the province.

Infrastructure and Transport Developments Announced

In the transport sector, the Sindh cabinet made a pivotal decision to transfer the BRT Red Line Lot-2 project to the Frontier Works Organisation. This move is geared towards expediting the construction work that has faced delays. Such advancements are critical for improving public transport within Karachi.

Additionally, the cabinet has authorised the allocation of land for a tide gauge station at French Beach, a measure that aims to enhance monitoring of coastal conditions. A temporary relaxation of the annual fishing ban was also approved, aiming to provide support to local fishermen during critical periods.

As part of the government’s focus on digital governance, the SBOSS platform is set to be transitioned to the Sindh IT Company. This is seen as a step to bolster the province’s technological capabilities and improve public service delivery.

Future Plans and Legislative Updates

The cabinet has laid out a comprehensive Sindh Postgraduate Residency Policy for 2026, which will facilitate a unified entry test and a merit-based system for 3,794 training slots. The financial allocation for this endeavour stands at PKR 4.739 billion, underscoring the government’s commitment to enhancing medical education.

Memon noted that more than ten autism centres have been established in Sindh, with the federal government now seeking assistance from the province to create a similar facility in Islamabad. This initiative highlights the continued focus on mental health and developmental disorders.

On constitutional matters, Memon stated that the federal government has yet to commence discussions concerning the proposed 28th Amendment. Sindh remains open to reviewing any proposals once they are officially presented. Additionally, improvements to connectivity in Karachi are anticipated with the expected completion of the Qayyumabad-to-KPT bridge project in the upcoming two years.
