The Rajya Sabha experienced significant disruptions on July 22 during the Monsoon session, as Congress President and Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge led a notable protest. The opposition demanded the immediate resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, alleging irregularities in the NEET-UG examinations and criticising police action against students protesting at Jantar Mantar. Kharge asserted that no discussions in the house would be allowed until the minister resigns.

Kharge stated, “For fair discussion on NEET, there will be no debate until Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigns.” His remarks came during a heated session marked by unrest from opposition members. The protest underscored the rising tensions regarding the handling of NEET-UG matters.

Government Responds to Opposition Allegations

In response to the accusations from the opposition, Leader of the House and Union Minister JP Nadda declared that the government was open to dialogue. He emphasised the Centre’s commitment to addressing all concerns pertaining to the alleged NEET-UG irregularities. “The government is ready to discuss all issues, including the NEET paper leak,” he stated, criticising the opposition for its conduct and describing it as irresponsible.

Nadda further asserted that the current administration, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, operates transparently and prioritises the populace’s interests, condemning the opposition’s activities as undemocratic. He referred to these actions as a violation of parliamentary decorum and democratic values.

Amid the turmoil, the Rajya Sabha was adjourned until 3 pm. Earlier, opposition members staged a demonstration on Parliament premises, dressed in black to signify their discontent with the government’s actions.

Congress MP Voices Concerns for Students

Prominent figures from the opposition, including Rahul Gandhi and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, participated in the protests, indicating significant unified opposition against the government’s approach. Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra articulated concerns regarding students’ rights and their legitimate demands. She pointed out that the education budget stands at Rs 1.4 lakh crore, yet the government has reportedly waived Rs 16 lakh crore in loans for major corporations.

Gandhi highlighted the ongoing issues with examination paper leaks and emphasised that peaceful protests are a democratic right. She insisted that the current treatment of students and opposition members in Parliament does not align with democratic values.

Kharge reiterated earlier statements regarding the government’s conduct, suggesting it mirrors a dictatorial regime. He expressed his discontent with how the police have managed the protests, alleging that BJP-RSS volunteers have been operating without appropriate identification, which he claims has resulted in the harassment of protesters. He warned that attempts to stifle opposition leaders would not deter the Congress party’s commitment to fighting for justice.

Commitment to Democratic Values

Kharge asserted that the Congress party would persist in its struggle, indicating that widespread support would manifest for their cause. He hinted that the government would face repercussions for its treatment of prominent Congress figures like Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi. He stated, “We are not going to be scared; we will continue to fight.” Kharge’s comments underscore the opposition’s determination to advocate for accountability and transparency in governance.

The ongoing protests and interactions signify heightened tensions between the opposition and the ruling government, illuminating the contentious atmosphere in the Indian political landscape. As the parliamentary session progresses, both sides remain steadfast in their positions, indicating a complex interplay of political dynamics.
