OpenAI Weighs Legal Options As Apple Eyes Gemini For Siri Upgrade

The CSR Journal Magazine

Reports indicate that Apple and OpenAI’s collaboration, which commenced in June 2024 to integrate ChatGPT directly into Siri, is facing significant tensions almost two years later. Initially designed to allow iPhone users to receive answers to complex queries without needing a separate application, the arrangement is reportedly not meeting OpenAI’s expectations.

According to Bloomberg, OpenAI is reportedly dissatisfied with how the integration has been executed. The development comes at a time when Apple plans to transition Siri to utilise Google’s Gemini AI models, potentially negating OpenAI’s services in the process.

OpenAI’s lawyers are allegedly engaged in discussions with an external legal firm to assess their options regarding the situation. While a lawsuit is reportedly not being considered, legal notices concerning a potential breach of contract may be forthcoming.

Details of the Initial Deal Between Apple and OpenAI

The partnership between the two tech giants was announced during Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in 2024. The agreement allowed users to access ChatGPT’s capabilities through Siri, with additional functionalities for image creation and text analysis being introduced subsequently.

Furthermore, Apple enabled iPhone users to subscribe to ChatGPT memberships via iOS settings, with the company taking a share of the revenue generated from these subscriptions. However, recent developments suggest that Apple has signed a new agreement with Google to leverage Gemini AI models, which may replace the existing integration of OpenAI’s technology.

In addition to the changes to Siri, Apple is reportedly planning to broaden access to its platforms for multiple AI providers, further enhancing user options with additional AI chatbots available through the App Store.

OpenAI’s Dissatisfaction with User Engagement

OpenAI initially forecast that the partnership would increase its user base, particularly for paid ChatGPT subscriptions. However, reports suggest that the actual user engagement through Apple’s services has fallen short of expectations. Studies conducted by OpenAI indicate that users favour the standalone ChatGPT app over its integration within Siri.

An OpenAI executive stated that the company has fulfilled its product commitments while expressing frustration over Apple’s limited implementation efforts. Users reportedly need to mention ChatGPT specifically within Siri to obtain relevant responses, and the delivery of information is restricted compared to the full capabilities of the standalone application.

As of now, OpenAI has not finalised its course of action regarding the situation. The company appears to favour resolving the issues amicably rather than pursuing legal action. Should it choose to proceed legally, this would likely be after the conclusion of an ongoing trial with Elon Musk.
