Odisha Government Initiates Plan to Transform Mining Roads into 8-Lane Highways

The Odisha government has commenced a significant infrastructural initiative aimed at enhancing connectivity in the Keonjhar district. On April 14, 2023, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi laid the foundation stone for the Barbil Bypass Ring Road Project, a long-awaited expectation among residents of Barbil. This project is part of a broader strategy to improve the region’s transport infrastructure.

During the ceremony, the Chief Minister not only inaugurated 24 projects with a total investment of Rs 29.41 crore but also laid the groundwork for an additional 51 projects, amounting to Rs 326.43 crore. The Barbil Bypass-cum-Ring Road is intended to cover a distance of 18.326 kilometres and will require an estimated Rs 1,581.21 crore for its completion.

A new electrical sub-station will also be constructed in the area, with a budget allocation of Rs 298 crore aimed at serving Joda, Basudevpur, and Barbil. This will bolster the electricity supply necessary for ongoing and future developments in the region.

Commitment to Infrastructure Development

Chief Minister Majhi highlighted the administration’s commitment to infrastructure as essential to realising the vision of a “Prosperous Odisha” (Samruddha Odisha). He reiterated that for the state to thrive, improvements in roads, bridges, electricity, and clean water are crucial.”

Among the key projects underway is the expansion of the Barbil-Paradip road into an 8-lane highway, aimed at improving the transport network significantly. The Chief Minister’s administration is focused on converting various roads leading to mining areas into 8-lane highways, thus enhancing accessibility and economic activity in these locations.

Additionally, the approval of a grid sub-station in Keonjhar by the state Cabinet signals ongoing efforts to ensure a stable and adequate power supply for both residential and industrial demands. The project, valued at Rs 1,647 crore, is projected to be finished within three years.

Focus on Industrial Development and Education

As part of its industrial development strategy, the Odisha government is currently working on plans to establish a Mega Steel Plant in Keonjhar. The foundation stone for this facility is expected to be laid soon, further demonstrating the government’s commitment to boosting economic growth in the region.

To attract substantial investments, the Chief Minister has assured support for any industrial house that undertakes projects exceeding Rs 10,000 crore and aims to generate employment for more than 10,000 individuals in Keonjhar. This is seen as a strategic move to increase local job opportunities and foster economic stability.

The Barbil ITI is also set to enhance its capabilities by evolving into a Centre of Excellence, reflecting the proficiency of Odisha’s skilled youth. This initiative is expected to empower the local workforce and promote vocational training.

In a concurrent event, the Chief Minister acknowledged the Prime Minister’s initiative on the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, which entails a 33 per cent reservation for women. He noted that this measure would facilitate the economic and social empowerment of women in the country. Moreover, he pointed out that the increase of seats in the Odisha Legislative Assembly to 196 will ensure a more prominent presence of women legislators, amplifying their representation in governance.
