Nitin Nabin, the president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), publicly condemned a protest organised by Congress leaders, including the party’s president Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, near Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official residence on July 21. Nabin characterised the conduct of the Leader of the Opposition as “unbecoming and condemnable,” stressing that such actions undermine the dignity associated with the Leader of the Opposition’s role.

The protest position highlighted a wider conflict as Nabin accused Gandhi of cultivating an image of anarchy, suggesting that his actions do not honour the responsibilities tied to significant parliamentary positions. He reiterated that the Prime Minister represents over 1.4 billion citizens and should not be viewed solely as the leader of a political party.

Reactions to the Protest and Detentions

During the protest, Rahul Gandhi and Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, along with former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, were detained by Delhi Police. The detentions followed as police attempted to disperse the protestors, including Akhilesh Yadav, the leader of the Samajwadi Party, who also participated in the demonstrations.

Priyanka Gandhi responded to the detentions, labelling the government’s actions as cowardly and proclaiming that the Congress party’s resolve remains unshaken in the face of intimidation. Her comments reinforced the belief within her party that their concerns warrant attention and that they are undeterred by governmental opposition.

The protest itself stemmed from demands for discussions in Parliament regarding the NEET-UG exam issue and the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan. Disruptions were reported in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha for a consecutive day due to these advocacy efforts from the Opposition, which points to ongoing tensions within Indian politics surrounding the education system.

Nabin’s Views on Political Decorum

Nabin described the day’s events as “unfortunate” and labelled it a “dark day” in the history of Indian politics, suggesting a breakdown of civility and decorum among political actors. He recounted his own experiences in the opposition and contrasted them with the recent actions taken by Congress leaders, indicating that while disagreements exist, proper channels and mutual respect should be observed.

Addressing the Congress party, he expressed a willingness for continued dialogue within Parliament but expressed concern regarding what he termed an “anarchic mindset” that seems to be developing in their ranks.
