Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd (GRSE) has marked a substantial achievement in the realm of indigenous shipbuilding with the launch of the first Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV) on August 11, 2026, in Kolkata. This vessel represents the first of four NGOPVs, with the contract for the series being signed on March 30, 2026. The initiative aims to bolster the Indian Navy’s operational capabilities and readiness in safeguarding national maritime interests.

Advanced Features and Versatile Capabilities

The NGOPVs are engineered with advanced naval combat systems that are expected to significantly enhance the Indian Navy’s ability to operate within the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). With a focus on achieving a higher level of indigenous content, the vessels are designed in alignment with the national objective of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’, or self-reliance. The multifunctional design allows the NGOPV to undertake extended sea operations effectively.

The vessels possess multi-role capabilities, which include Seaward Defence, ‘Out of Area’ Contingency Operations (OOAC), Non-Combatant Evacuation Operations (NEO), and anti-piracy missions. They are also equipped to handle counter-infiltration and anti-poaching operations. Moreover, these ships can operate as hospital vessels, provide fleet maintenance support, and perform Communication Intelligence (COMINT) functions. Their design is further suited for Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) and Search and Rescue (SAR) missions.

A notable feature of the NGOPVs is their integrated helicopter capacity, which is supported by the Next Generation Helicopter Harnessing and Traversing System (NGHHTS). This addition enhances the vessels’ operational versatility, particularly in conducting special operations, making them critical assets for maritime security.

Specifications and Operational Readiness

The technical specifications of the NGOPV underline its advanced capabilities. The vessel measures 113 metres in length and 14.6 metres in breadth, with a design displacement of approximately 3,000 tonnes. It can achieve a maximum speed of 23 knots, allowing for rapid deployment during various missions. Additionally, the NGOPV boasts an impressive endurance capability of 8,000 nautical miles when travelling at a speed of 14 knots, enabling it to operate independently over extended periods.

Armed to ensure maritime security, the vessel is fitted with state-of-the-art weaponry and sensors. This includes an upgraded Super Rapid Gun Mount (SRGM), AK-630, Stabilised Remote Control Gun (SRCG), and Lynx U2 systems. For underwater defence, the NGOPV incorporates the Advanced Torpedo Defence System (ATDS) and Electronic Surveillance Measures (ESM) through Varuna. These advanced systems are essential for effective engagement and defence during operations.

The ship is designed to accommodate a crew of 24 officers and 124 sailors. This complements the Indian Navy’s capabilities by providing a modern asset tailored for maritime surveillance and security missions. The commissioning of such advanced vessels is expected to play a pivotal role in enhancing the operational efficiencies of the Indian Navy in the evolving maritime landscape.
