National Dental Commission Requests Report Following BDS Student’s Suicide at Ancharakandi Dental College

The CSR Journal Magazine

The National Dental Commission has requested a report from the principal of Ancharakandi Dental College in Kannur, Kerala, following the tragic suicide of Nithin Raj, a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) student. This request came after a complaint from Yadhu Krishnan, the State Secretary of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).

On April 10, the student was found critically injured after allegedly falling from a building on the college campus. First responders rushed him to the medical college hospital, where he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.

In response to the incident, Kerala’s Health Minister, Veena George, labelled the situation as “shocking and deeply painful.” The minister has assured that rigorous legal measures will be enacted against those found culpable. Furthermore, she emphasised the emotional turmoil experienced by the student’s family and condemned any form of caste-based harassment on educational campuses.

Investigation and Legal Actions

The Chakkarakkal police have registered a case related to the incident, which includes charges of abetment to suicide under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Additionally, provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act have been incorporated into the First Information Report (FIR). This report was initiated following a complaint from the deceased’s father.

In an effort to ensure a thorough investigation, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by Kannur Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Hari Prasad has been established. The team is tasked with conducting an exhaustive inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.

Minister George confirmed that the Keralam University of Health Sciences has also initiated its own inquiry committee, reinforcing the commitment to thorough scrutiny and accountability in this tragic matter.

Campus and Community Reactions

Congress MP K. Suresh characterised the incident as “institutional murder,” emphasising that the death of a Dalit student highlights the ongoing issues of caste discrimination within educational institutions in Kerala. He stated that the systemic harassment faced by such students undermines the dignity of the state and poses a significant challenge to constitutional values.

As the investigation unfolds, the focus remains on addressing the underlying issues of caste-based discrimination and ensuring that justice is served for Nithin Raj and his grieving family. The incident continues to resonate deeply within the educational community and broader society in Kerala, provoking discussions about the critical need for reform and protective measures against discrimination in academic environments.
