Nasa Astronauts to Wear Prada-Designed Water-Cooled Garments Under Spacesuits

The latest development in spacesuit technology comes from a unique collaboration between Italian luxury brand Prada and Houston-based startup Axiom Space. This partnership produces a high-performance inner layer specifically designed for NASA’s upcoming lunar missions. Known as the Liquid Cooling and Ventilation Garment (LCVG), this innovative suit will be utilised by astronauts during the Artemis III and IV missions, slated to return humans to the Moon after over half a century.

The LCVG will serve as an essential inner layer for the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU), which is NASA’s next-generation spacesuit. The Artemis III mission, targeted for launch in 2026, aims to land at the Moon’s South Pole, marking a significant milestone in human space exploration.

Axiom Space has presented this advancement in a formal announcement, emphasising the extraordinary intersection of aerospace engineering and high-end fashion. This initiative underscores the necessity of temperature regulation in ensuring astronaut safety and comfort during extensive spacewalks.

Technological Features of the LCVG

The LCVG is engineered to address the significant thermal challenges astronauts face while engaged in physically demanding activities. During spacewalks that may last up to eight hours, a considerable amount of metabolic heat is generated by the body. To mitigate overheating, the garment incorporates an advanced network of tubes designed to circulate cold water across major muscle groups, effectively dissipating heat as confirmed by Axiom Space.

One of the key innovations of this garment is its fully redundant cooling circuit. This feature ensures that if the primary cooling system fails, a backup mechanism will activate to maintain the astronaut’s temperature, thus enhancing safety in the extreme conditions of outer space.

In addition to regulating temperature, the LCVG also manages ventilation. A dedicated loop of tubes is integrated to deliver fresh oxygen to the astronaut’s face, efficiently removing exhaled carbon dioxide. The expelled CO2 is then directed back through a life-support system for filtering and recirculation, contributing to a controlled life-support environment.

Jonathan Cirtain, CEO and President of Axiom Space, remarked on the significance of this collaboration, stating that the future of space exploration requires the integration of multiple disciplines. He highlighted that the combined efforts of Axiom Space and Prada embody an innovative approach that advances human spaceflight into a new era.

Lorenzo Bertelli, Chief Marketing Officer and Head of Sustainability at Prada, expressed pride in their role in this project. He indicated that the design and craftsmanship of the LCVG showcase Prada’s expertise in utilising advanced materials and 3D modelling techniques to ensure both functionality and comfort for astronauts during demanding missions.

Russell Ralston, Senior Vice President of Spacecraft Development at Axiom Space, noted the garment’s critical role in preserving astronaut safety. He stated that the LCVG is essential in managing thermal environments and aiding in breathing while astronauts are engaged in strenuous activities outside their spacecraft. Ralston emphasised the unprecedented advancements made possible through the partnership with Prada.

The unveiling of the LCVG comes ahead of the AxEMU’s outer layer presentation, which is scheduled for 2024 at the International Astronautical Congress in Milan. This progression highlights the ongoing commitment to enhancing astronaut performance and safety in upcoming lunar missions.
