“My Daughter Will Make Lotus Bloom All Over Bengal”: BJP Candidate and Mother of RG Kar Victim Ratna Debnath

The CSR Journal Magazine

Ratna Debnath, the BJP candidate from the Panihati assembly constituency and mother of the victim in the RG Kar Medical College case, is framing the West Bengal assembly elections as a quest for justice. As the counting of votes progresses, Debnath is leading by over 56,000 votes, highlighting the community’s backing for her cause. She commented that the support for her daughter will symbolically result in “making the lotus bloom all over Bengal.”

Debnath expressed her determination to continue fighting for her daughter’s memory, balancing the legal proceedings related to the case with her election campaign. She stated, “My daughter is no longer just mine; the whole world is looking at Panihati. This vote signifies our fight for justice, which will persist as long as I live.” She also mentioned an upcoming court hearing scheduled for May 12 at 10 am, during which she aims to manage both her legal and electoral commitments.

Significant Shift in Political Landscape

The 2026 West Bengal election has witnessed a remarkable shift, with Ratna Debnath emerging from personal tragedy to a formidable political figure. She has gained a substantial lead in Panihati, a constituency that had consistently been under the control of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) since 2011. Her campaign has reshaped the narrative from a traditional rivalry to one focused on citizens challenging the political establishment.

Debnath’s presence in the elections has transformed local grievances into a broader dialogue regarding women’s safety in the state. Her slogan, “My daughter’s tragedy could have happened to anyone,” resonates deeply in families across Bengal, positioning her movement not just as a fight against a political party, but as a statewide reflection on societal issues.

Before the election results, Debnath warned the current government about an impending shift in public sentiment, expressing the people’s readiness to “uproot and throw out” the TMC. She voiced her discontent regarding the government’s approach to women’s safety, indirectly critiquing statements made by the Chief Minister that have been perceived as dismissive of women’s concerns.

Challenges Faced During Campaign

Throughout her campaign, Debnath has faced numerous challenges, including allegations of harassment and intimidation by TMC supporters. Incidents on polling day reportedly involved her being encircled and verbally abused by rival party activists who accused her of exploiting her daughter’s case for political gain.

Panihati, situated in the North 24 Parganas district, has become a focal point for political tension. Debnath’s surge in votes reflects a significant shift in the urban-industrial demographic, largely energised by public concern surrounding the RG Kar Medical College incident. Her campaign has been intensely personal, centring on the need for enhanced women’s safety and judicial accountability.

Despite the challenges, Debnath’s supporters believe that actions taken against her have only strengthened the resolve of the electorate, leading to a ‘silent vote’ in her favour. As the election counting continues, her role as both a mother advocating for justice and a candidate representing change is drawing national attention.
