Modi Visits Seychelles, Highlights Strong India-Seychelles Friendship

The CSR Journal Magazine

Prime Minister Narendra Modi characterised the relationship between India and Seychelles as “steady, strong, and long-lasting.” This declaration was made during a state dinner hosted by Seychelles President Patrick Herminie, following Modi’s arrival for a three-day official visit. The Prime Minister’s presence coincides with the celebrations marking the golden jubilee of Seychelles’ National Day, where he serves as the Guest of Honour.

The focus of Modi’s visit is to reinforce the collaboration between the two nations, particularly in development, defence, and maritime security. The Indian Prime Minister asserted that both countries would collectively “win the race” in their collaborative endeavours.

In his remarks at the dinner, Herminie acknowledged India’s consistent friendship towards Seychelles, a sentiment that has been warmly reciprocated by the local populace and the vibrant Indian diaspora present in the nation.

Key Developments During the Visit

During the visit, Modi accomplished several significant tasks, including the handover of a ‘Made in India’ fast patrol vessel to the Seychelles Coast Guard. He and Herminie also visited the Seychelles National Botanical Garden, where they participated in a tree-plantation ceremony aimed at promoting environmental sustainability.

Following the dinner, the Seychelles President’s Office released a statement detailing the enduring partnership that has existed since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1976. It was noted that India has been a dedicated development partner, contributing to sectors such as infrastructure, health, and maritime security.

Modi’s transfer of the fast patrol vessel, named Lespwar, was highlighted as a notable milestone enhancing the collaborative rapport in defence and maritime security. The Indian Prime Minister expressed that this transfer is part of a broader commitment to bolster Seychelles’ security priorities.

Engagement with the Indian Diaspora and Support for Environmental Initiatives

As the Prime Minister landed at Seychelles International Airport, he received a ceremonial Guard of Honour from Herminie and a high-level delegation. In addition to the warm welcome, Modi interacted with a substantial gathering of the Indian diaspora outside the airport, who expressed their admiration by waving Indian flags.

Modi took to social media to commend the Indian community for their warm reception, highlighting their significant contributions towards Seychelles’ progress. He noted how the community serves as a crucial link between the two nations.

The visit also placed an emphasis on environmental cooperation, demonstrated by the tree-plantation ceremony. This initiative symbolises a shared commitment towards biodiversity conservation and protection of the environment, aligning both countries’ interests in sustainable development.

The Prime Minister’s earlier visit to Seychelles occurred in 2015, while Herminie’s trip to India took place earlier this year. Before departing from New Delhi, Modi remarked on the importance of Seychelles as a maritime neighbour and expressed optimism regarding furthering bilateral cooperation to promote security and prosperity in the Indian Ocean region.

During the visit, it is also anticipated that Modi will address the Seychelles National Assembly and participate in discussions with members of the Indian community.
