Massive Dust Storm Approaches Delhi in Coming Hours

The CSR Journal Magazine

A significant dust storm, referred to as an aandhi, is heading towards the Delhi-NCR region from the west. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert to inform the public about the impending weather conditions. This warning indicates potential reductions in visibility, increased wind speeds, and a notable decrease in air quality over the next few hours.

The Thar Desert in Rajasthan serves as a major contributor to this phenomenon. During May, temperatures in the region often soar to between 44 and 45 degrees Celsius, leading to extremely dry soil. Under such conditions, the smallest particles of sand and dust become loose and easily lifted.

As robust thunderstorm clouds develop in the atmosphere, they generate strong downdrafts—downward blasts of cold air that strike the heated surface with substantial force. These downdrafts expand outwards at speeds reaching up to 50 kilometres per hour, displacing vast quantities of dust into the air and creating what is visually perceived as a massive brown wall, commonly identified as a dust storm.

Delhi’s Vulnerability to Dust Storms

Delhi’s geographical position places it directly in the trajectory of dust storms originating from northwest India. The region exists in a corridor connecting Rajasthan and the Indo-Gangetic Plain. The pre-monsoon westerly winds function as a conveyor system, transporting dust from Rajasthan through Haryana into the capital and further into Uttar Pradesh.

This natural highway for dust particles significantly heightens the likelihood of Delhi experiencing adverse weather due to storms that form in surrounding areas. As winds travel across the desert landscape, they gather dust particles that are then released into the atmosphere, impacting areas along their path.

The forthcoming dust storm is expected to exhibit similar characteristics. Residents should prepare for the effects as the storm approaches, particularly since its impact on air quality can be severe.

Health Implications of the Dust Storm

Dust storms are notorious for elevating levels of particulate matter, specifically PM10 and PM2.5, which are tiny particles that pose risks to respiratory health. With the storm on the horizon, the Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi is anticipated to worsen significantly. Those who suffer from respiratory issues, including asthma and allergies, may face heightened health risks during this time.

The IMD recommends that vulnerable individuals remain indoors, keep windows closed, and wear masks if it is necessary to go outdoors. Although temperatures may see a brief drop of four to five degrees Celsius once the dust storm arrives, any resultant relief is expected to be temporary.

As the storm passes, conditions are projected to return to normal by approximately 10 pm, although the exact timeline may vary based on the storm’s intensity and movement. Residents are advised to stay informed and take precautionary measures as the situation develops.
