Manish Sisodia Meets Kejriwal Following Departure of MPs from AAP to BJP

The CSR Journal Magazine

Manish Sisodia’s meeting with Arvind Kejriwal comes in the wake of significant developments within the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Following the departure of two-thirds of its Rajya Sabha MPs to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), AAP has initiated discussions regarding its future strategy. Sisodia met Kejriwal at the latter’s residence after returning from a campaign trip in Gujarat.

Sources within the party have indicated that Sisodia went directly to Kejriwal’s residence after landing in Delhi late at night. The two leaders engaged in a dialogue that lasted over thirty minutes, focusing on the repercussions of the MPs’ departure and outlining potential strategies to mitigate the impact of this political fragmentation.

This meeting underscores the urgency with which AAP is addressing the situation, as they strive to maintain their influence and integrity within the political landscape. This shift poses challenges for the party’s organisation and its leadership dynamic.

Formal Actions Planned Against Defectors

In a formal response to the MPs’ exit, AAP is preparing to submit a letter to the Rajya Sabha Chairman regarding the defectors. Raghav Chadha, along with six other MPs, has reportedly notified the Chairman of their departure from AAP in accordance with parliamentary rules. This action initiates a critical phase for the party as they seek to address the breaches in party loyalty.

The chief whip in the Rajya Sabha, N.D. Gupta, is tasked with submitting the letter aiming for repercussions under the anti-defection law. The complaint will specifically name the three MPs—Raghav Chadha, Sandeep Pathak, and Ashok Mittal—who have been publicly associated with the BJP. It is notable that while these three were visibly involved in crossing over, the remaining four MPs did not have public appearances aligning with the BJP.

Senior AAP leader Sanjay Singh has also committed to writing to the Rajya Sabha Chairman, insisting on the disqualification of the three MPs in question. His request references the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution, which outlines the provisions for disqualification based on defection.

Ongoing Tensions Within AAP

The backdrop to these departures reveals underlying tensions within AAP. An open rift has been perceptible in recent weeks, exacerbated by Chadha’s removal as deputy leader in the Rajya Sabha. This decision has led to vocal criticism from several party members, who have accused him of being overly accommodating towards the BJP.

The departure of Ashok Kumar Mittal, who succeeded Chadha, further complicates the AAP’s internal dynamics. Alongside Mittal, other leaders including Sandeep Pathak, Harbhajan Singh, Rajinder Gupta, Vikramjit Singh Sahney, and Swati Maliwal have joined forces with the BJP. Their actions represent a strategic shift that AAP will need to confront head-on.

This growing fragmentation poses a significant challenge for AAP’s leadership and impacts its positioning in future electoral contests. Addressing the fallout will require careful management to retain party cohesion and public support.
