Mallikarjun Kharge, the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha and President of the Congress Party, has responded critically to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent remarks during the Monsoon session of Parliament. Kharge accused the Prime Minister of employing rhetoric as a means to distract from significant governance failures, particularly in relation to the NEET controversy and alleged misconduct within the Ram Mandir Trust.

In a media interaction, Kharge expressed his disapproval of Modi’s tone, suggesting that the head of state should prioritise addressing structural issues over making political jabs. He specifically pointed out the plight of thousands of students impacted by the complications surrounding the NEET examination and raised concerns regarding the administration’s management of religious trusts.

Kharge remarked, “The Prime Minister’s focus appears to lie in mocking others rather than addressing real concerns. It is essential for him to establish credibility. Where has that ’56-inch chest’ gone? Today he admonishes others, yet I ask: what concrete contributions has he made to the country?”

Concerns Over NEET and Ram Mandir Trust

Kharge highlighted the distress faced by countless students who have left their homes in pursuit of education, stating, “These students are facing tremendous difficulties as a result of the current government’s handling of the NEET issue. The responsibility for their suffering lies squarely with PM Modi and his administration.” He emphasised that such issues are not merely policy failures but rather personal failures of leadership.

Additionally, Kharge accused the Modi government of facilitating corruption within the Ram Mandir Trust, asserting that individuals connected to the administration are allegedly involved in illicit activities. “The trust has become a platform for stealing public resources, with PM Modi facilitating these nominations,” he claimed during his address.

In his condemnation of the Prime Minister’s comments, Kharge expressed that every leader should aim to propose solutions rather than resort to remarks that may incite public ridicule. “If the Prime Minister continues to engage in such behaviour, the prospects for national prosperity will remain bleak,” he asserted.

Modi’s Comments on Young Innovators

Kharge’s statements follow PM Modi’s speech, where he appeared to take a subtle dig at Rahul Gandhi while celebrating India’s advancements in space technology. The Prime Minister noted the contributions of the younger generation in the success of the space startup Skyroot Aerospace, emphasising that he was referring to individuals around 28 years of age, rather than any older leaders.

During a press interaction, Modi detailed recent milestones in India’s space sector, highlighting the achievement of having an Indian citizen reach the International Space Station. “Before last year’s Monsoon Session, our country witnessed a remarkable event, and just recently, a startup accomplished a significant milestone in our space endeavours. Few nations have experienced such private venture success, and our younger innovators are leading this charge,” said Modi.

Addressing the personnel behind Skyroot Aerospace, he remarked on their average age being merely 28, contrasting it with the ages of more established political figures. He stated, “This team of young achievers has accomplished significant feats without referencing any ’56-year-old young star.’ They are the ones who have pioneered these remarkable achievements for India,” underscoring the youthful dynamism of the nation’s innovators.
