A substantial landslide has obstructed the road leading to Rajmachi Fort, resulting in a complete halt of vehicular traffic in Lonavala on Sunday, July 5. The event has forced local authorities to initiate debris clearance operations, utilising earth-moving equipment to resolve the situation efficiently. Traffic and local police reported that substantial efforts are underway to restore access to this popular tourist destination.

Weather Conditions and Alerts

This incident coincided with a significant rainfall occurring across Maharashtra, leading the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a ‘Red Alert’ for various regions of the state. The IMD has predicted that the weather will remain overcast with moderate rainfall expected to persist until July 10 in Tehsil Mawal, located in Pune district. This alert indicates that residents should remain cautious as heavy rainfall may lead to further disruptions.

The Pawana River in the Ravet area of Pimpri-Chinchwad has been reported to be flowing vigorously due to the intense rainfall. While some regions are facing the brunt of these weather conditions, the Kondhwa area of Pune has experienced lighter showers, bringing a measure of relief to local markets, which have continued to operate despite the wet conditions.

In Mumbai, heavy rain has resulted in overcast skies in the Worli area. Marine Drive also witnessed misty conditions as the downpour continued. Earlier in the day, a balcony from a dilapidated building in Belapur village, Navi Mumbai, collapsed under the strain of the heavy rains. Reports indicated that this structure was in a severely deteriorated state prior to the incident.

Impact on Local Infrastructure

In addition to the landslide and building collapse, various areas in Thane city have been affected by significant waterlogging. Emergency services are likely to be stretched as they respond to multiple incidents caused by the heavy rainfall and associated risks. Local authorities are assessing the extent of damages and responding to calls for assistance where needed.

Despite these weather-related disruptions, Vineet Abhishek, Chief Public Relations Officer for Western Railway, confirmed that train operations have continued without interruption. The Western Railway suburban network recorded impressive rainfall levels, exceeding 250 mm since the previous Saturday night. Abhishek noted that pockets within the network saw rainfall in the range of 150 to 200 mm, yet these conditions have not adversely affected local or long-distance train services.

Despite the challenges posed by adverse weather, efforts are being made to maintain essential transportation services. The dedication of railway and emergency personnel in managing these operations is critical during such severe weather events. As conditions remain precarious, communities are urged to stay alert and heed advice from local authorities regarding safety and travel.
