Maharashtra Heatwave Alert: Pune Temperatures Cross 43°C As IMD Issues Warning

The CSR Journal Magazine

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced a heatwave alert for multiple regions within Maharashtra as extreme temperature conditions intensify across the state. Pune has been notably impacted, with maximum temperatures exceeding 43°C in certain areas over recent days, which is significantly above the usual highs for this time of year in Maharashtra.

The IMD has indicated that these heatwave conditions are expected to continue in various parts of the state for the upcoming days. Specifically, areas in Vidarbha will endure these conditions until May 16, while Marathwada is under alert until May 15. The regions of Konkan, Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, and Gujarat will experience similar effects until May 14. This alert affects a large population across western and central India.

Increasing Night Temperatures

One of the most challenging aspects of this heatwave is the rising night temperatures, which do not allow the body sufficient cooling and recovery overnight. In Pune, minimum temperatures have reached discomforting levels. Magarpatta recorded a low of 28.1°C, Koregaon Park recorded 27.6°C, and Lohegaon reported 27°C. Even areas typically known for their greenery, such as Shivajinagar, logged a minimum of 26.3°C.

In contrast, locations with more open land and vegetation reported notably lower temperatures. The National Defence Academy (NDA) in Khadakwasla observed a minimum of 21.8°C, while Lavale recorded 23.7°C and Pashan was at 24.2°C. The nearly 7°C temperature difference in Pune between Magarpatta and the NDA highlights an important environmental issue that experts are not dismissing as coincidental.

Meteorologist Dr Sanap attributed the significant variance in temperatures within the same city to the urban heat island effect. This phenomenon occurs when densely constructed areas become considerably warmer than their surroundings. Concrete buildings, asphalt roads, and reduced greenery capture heat during the day, slowly releasing it at night, which keeps urban environments warmer long after sunset.

Impacts and Advisory Measures

Meanwhile, areas characterised by vegetation and open spaces cool down more quickly, providing a stark contrast in temperature dynamics. The ongoing heatwave in Maharashtra aligns with a broader trend of rising summer temperatures across the country, prompting the IMD to issue heatwave warnings for Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat as well. In some regions of Rajasthan, temperatures have reportedly surpassed 47°C.

Health officials have been proactive in advising residents in areas affected by the heatwave. Recommendations include limiting outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours, ensuring adequate hydration, and opting for light, loose clothing when venturing outside. Such measures aim to mitigate the health risks posed by the soaring temperatures and to promote well-being during this challenging weather event.

As the heatwave continues to unfold, residents and local authorities are urged to remain vigilant and adhere to safety guidelines to protect themselves from the adverse effects of the extreme heat. This ongoing situation necessitates awareness and preparedness across Maharashtra, as communities navigate the challenges posed by the exceptional rise in temperatures.
