Magnitude 5.8 Earthquake Hits Bhutan, Several Aftershocks Recorded

The CSR Journal Magazine

An earthquake registering a magnitude of 5.8 occurred in Bhutan on June 7, 2026, reported the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). The seismic event took place at 11:06 PM Indian Standard Time, with a recorded depth of 26 kilometres. The geographical coordinates of the quake were reported as latitude 27.627 N and longitude 89.660 E.

The NCS provided additional technical information, confirming the earthquake specifics in a social media post. This incident highlighted Bhutan’s vulnerability to seismic activity, given its geographical location in a seismically active region. Such earthquakes can potentially cause considerable damage and disruption, necessitating prompt responses from authorities.

Officials and residents have been alerted regarding the potential risks associated with earthquakes in the area. The NCS continues to monitor seismic activity closely and provides updates as more information becomes available.

Aftershocks Recorded

Following the main earthquake, several aftershocks were documented. The first of these occurred shortly after the initial quake, registering a magnitude of 2.8 at 11:18 PM IST, at a depth of 22 kilometres. This aftershock suggests ongoing tectonic activity in the region, which may cause further concern for local populations.

Another significant aftershock occurred at 11:52 PM IST, with a magnitude of 2.4 and a depth of 18 kilometres. The locations for both aftershocks were also in Bhutan, reinforcing the seismic nature of the area. Experts urge caution as aftershocks are often part of the series of tremors following a significant quake.

Authorities are currently assessing the situation and coordinating potential relief measures should the need arise. The NCS has advised residents to remain aware of safety protocols during such seismic events and to prepare accordingly.

Future Monitoring and Precautions

As further data becomes available, the NCS will continue to release information about any additional seismic activities. The situation remains fluid, and the authorities are committed to ensuring the safety of residents in the affected areas. Monitoring equipment has been deployed to gather detailed data on the ongoing seismic situation.

In light of the quake, it is essential for residents to have access to up-to-date information through available platforms, including the BhooKamp App as recommended by the NCS. This mobile application can provide real-time alerts and safety guidance during seismic events.

Emergency protocols are being reviewed, and local authorities are preparing for any required preventative measures to mitigate risks associated with further tremors. Community awareness campaigns may be initiated to educate the public on earthquake preparedness and response.
