A notable seismic event registered a 7.4 magnitude earthquake in western Colombia and neighbouring regions, leading to significant evacuations. The earthquake was reported on Monday near San Jose del Palmar in the Choco region, situated approximately 400 km west of the Colombian capital, Bogota. Initially, Colombian authorities had estimated the quake’s magnitude at 6.6, as stated by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and the Colombian geological service.

The earthquake struck at a depth of about 107 km. Fortunately, the US tsunami warning system indicated that there was no tsunami threat following the earthquake. Officials have begun emergency assessments in the impacted areas to determine the extent of damage and injuries caused.

Immediate Response and Damage Assessment

Following the earthquake, Choco Governor Nubia Carolina Cordoba-Curi acknowledged the incident on social media and expressed concerns regarding potential aftershocks. She highlighted that there are reports of injuries and considerable damage to infrastructure in Quibdo, the provincial capital. Emergency services are actively working to evaluate the damage and will provide an official assessment soon.

Residents in both Colombia and Ecuador have been advised to stay vigilant as rescue teams continue to monitor the situation. In response to the quake, precautionary evacuations were conducted in Bogota. Various news sources reported images of collapsed buildings in different cities affected by the earthquake.

In Quibdo, video footage from an AFP reporter has documented the destruction of structures. Further reports indicated that Pereira and Manizales, notable urban areas in tourist regions such as Eje Cafetero, also experienced damage, with buildings reportedly collapsing in these cities.

Casualties and Continuing Risk

This recent seismic event comes in the wake of two significant earthquakes that affected Venezuela in late June, which resulted in over 6,000 fatalities and extensive structural damage. The tremors in Venezuela measured 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, marking them as some of the deadliest earthquakes to occur in the region in recent years and raising concerns about regional seismic activity.

Amidst these challenges, local and national authorities continue to respond as effectively as possible.
