The recent tragedy in Rajgarh, Madhya Pradesh, resulted in the deaths of nine family members when their Omni van was swept away by strong currents on Monday. The victims were reportedly heading to a shrine in Kalawat for prayers when the incident occurred. According to Sarangpur Sub-Divisional Magistrate Rohit Bamhore, two individuals from the vehicle were rescued by local residents, while search efforts for an eleventh person are ongoing.

The victims hailed from Satwas in Dewas district and were part of a larger group travelling together. They encountered disaster shortly after 9:00 AM when the vehicle fell off a bridge in Padna village. This tragic incident occurred amid reports of heavy overnight rains that resulted in waterlogging across approximately 40 to 45 villages in the region.

Rescue Operations and Response

Local administration and rescue teams promptly responded to the scene following reports of the accident. SDM Bamhore mentioned that urgent alerts from village residents had been issued, advising the driver not to cross the flooded bridge. Despite these warnings, the driver proceeded, leading to the vehicle’s plunge into the water below. The subsequent rescue efforts saw two individuals successfully saved, while the bodies of the nine deceased were retrieved shortly thereafter.

The search operations for the missing person continue, with local authorities coordinating efforts on the ground. The rescue teams included local villagers who actively participated in the recovery operations, demonstrating a community effort in the face of this tragedy.

Bamhore explained that the financial assistance of Rs 6 lakh is being arranged for the affected family, following directives from the Chief Minister and district collector. This financial aid aims to provide some support to the bereaved family members in their time of need.

Victims and Community Impact

Among the deceased, the family included three women and three children, marking a devastating loss for the community. Local sources have confirmed that all eleven individuals involved were related, with the vehicle being registered in the name of Mukesh Chauhan, who was driving at the time of the incident. Bamhore noted that the local community is deeply affected by the loss and is offering support to the grieving family.

Witnesses have indicated that the water level on the bridge was dangerously high due to the persistent rainfall, making the decision to cross even more perilous. The residents of Padna village had raised concerns about the safety of the bridge, showing a clear understanding of the risks involved. However, their cautions went unheeded, resulting in this unfortunate event.

The Rajgarh tragedy highlights the frequent challenges communities face during monsoon season, as road safety measures often struggle to keep pace with adverse weather conditions. The local administration is expected to assess the situation further to enhance safety protocols and prevent future incidents of this nature.
