KT Rama Rao, the Working President of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), has strongly condemned the alleged actions of the Delhi Police against students and youth protesting in response to claims of a leak in the NEET exam paper. The protests have reportedly seen instances of police using excessive force against demonstrators, which KTR has labelled as “undemocratic and shameful.”

In a statement shared on the social media platform X, KTR expressed his concern regarding the police’s handling of the protests, stating that it is unacceptable to use lathis and tear gas to respond to peaceful demonstrators. He emphasised that the Constitution guarantees every citizen the right to question and protest, calling for an immediate halt to what he perceives as the suppression of dissent by the central government.

He expressed solidarity with the students and citizens engaging in demonstrations, urging them to stay safe amidst the escalating tensions. KTR’s remarks come as tensions rise within the national capital over the issue of alleged examination irregularities.

Protests Escalate in the National Capital

As protests continued to grow in intensity in Delhi, members of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) attempted to march towards Parliament, demanding accountability from relevant authorities regarding the alleged NEET exam paper leak. Reports indicate that clashes erupted between the protesters and police, leading to injuries among law enforcement personnel while they attempted to disperse the crowd near Parliament Street.

A Sub Inspector with the Delhi Police commented on the situation, stating that the police were stationed at barricades when they were met with stone-pelting from the protesters. This escalation has raised questions about police conduct during public demonstrations, as numerous individuals have been affected amidst the chaos.

In light of the police action, various political figures have stepped forward to voice their concerns. Among them is Dimple Yadav, a Member of Parliament from the Samajwadi Party, who described the police’s method of dispersing protestors at Jantar Mantar as a “black day for democracy.” She has called for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, citing the excessive use of force against protesting students.

Opposition Demands Accountability

Dimple Yadav has levied allegations that police personnel used disproportionate force during the protests, claiming that students were subjected to physical violence, which she stated included beatings and electric shocks. Yadav further noted that some police officers exhibited behaviour akin to ‘goons,’ suggesting a serious deviation from standard police protocols.

She highlighted the visual evidence of shame on the faces of certain officers, suggesting an internal conflict within the police force about their actions during the protests. Yadav pledged that the Opposition will escalate the issue in Parliament to ensure the government faces consequences for its actions against demonstrators.

Stressing the significant impact of this incident on India’s democratic framework, Yadav strongly condemned the actions taken by the police, asserting that such measures strike at the very heart of the nation. The demand for the removal of the Education Minister forms part of her call for greater accountability in government actions concerning student rights and freedom to protest.
