The CSR Journal Magazine

A 25-year-old woman has been charged in connection with the alleged sexual assault of a 16-year-old girl in Kerala. The accused, Sneha Merlin, resides in Kannur. According to Kerala police, the incident reportedly occurred several months ago at the girl’s home in Kasaragod, where she did not initially disclose the events to anyone.

The situation came to light during a counselling session, which prompted the minor’s parents to learn of the alleged assault and subsequently file a complaint against Merlin. The police reported that Merlin was a friend of the victim’s mother and visited their household often, during which the alleged incident took place.

Legal Proceedings Initiated

The police have registered a case against Merlin under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Officials have stated that her arrest will occur shortly as the investigation continues into the details of the case.

The frequency of Merlin’s visits to the family, due to her friendship with the girl’s mother, reportedly created a level of trust that was breached during the alleged encounter. The police indicated they are treating this allegation with seriousness and urgency, ensuring the survivor receives the necessary support and protection.

Authorities revealed that Merlin is not a newcomer to such legal troubles, as she reportedly has been involved in three other POCSO cases. These prior incidents include allegations made in March 2025, alongside separate cases involving minor boys as survivors.

Prior Allegations and Legal History

Merlin’s prior incidents were recorded at the Taliparamba police station, with charges that included Sections 75 (sexual harassment) and 332 (house trespass) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Furthermore, allegations against her under the POCSO Act involve Sections 5(l) (penetrative sexual assault) and 9(l) (aggravated sexual assault).

The police have made it clear that there are ongoing investigations concerning other criminal cases linked to Merlin. They are currently delving into her background to ascertain the full extent of her alleged involvement in similar offences.

The recent case highlights the importance of open dialogue about sexual assault, particularly in contexts involving minors. The revelation of the abuse during a counselling session underscores the critical need for such support systems in identifying and addressing cases of sexual violence.
