Kerala Experiences Severe Flooding Due to Heavy Rains

The CSR Journal Magazine

The recent heavy rainfall in Kerala has resulted in extensive flooding, significantly affecting daily life across the state. Reports indicate that waterlogging has become widespread, with various regions facing disrupted routines and infrastructure damage. A tragic incident in Thrissur district saw a 29-year-old man lose his life when a tree collapsed onto a temporary shelter where he was sleeping, highlighting the dangers posed by the extreme weather.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has responded by issuing a red alert across five districts, including Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod. This alert signifies expectations of rainfall exceeding 20 centimetres within 24 hours, indicating a situation that requires immediate attention from local authorities.

Additionally, the IMD has placed several other districts, such as Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, and Palakkad, under an orange alert, indicating expected rainfall between 11 and 20 centimetres. The remaining three districts of the state are currently under a yellow alert, which warns of heavy rain ranging from 6 to 11 centimetres.

Government Response and Safety Measures

In light of the extreme weather conditions, local authorities have deemed it necessary to implement several precautionary measures. Officials have restricted travel to tourist trekking locations and prohibited night travel on hilly roads, particularly in Wayanad, Kozhikode, and Kasaragod on Saturday. These measures aim to ensure public safety and limit potential accidents during the ongoing weather crisis.

Furthermore, a holiday has been declared for educational institutions across several districts due to the adverse weather forecasts. Schools and colleges in Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod have suspended classes, with district collectors in these areas also announcing a halt to educational activities in professional colleges, anganwadis, and other educational centres to safeguard students during the rainstorm.

The Kannur District Collector specifically noted that educational institutions would observe a holiday following the IMD’s red alert and the ongoing downpour. However, residential schools are exempt from this order, maintaining operational status for those students. Scheduled university exams and public interviews will proceed as planned, despite the inclement weather.

Forecast and Future Weather Patterns

The IMD reports that the southwest monsoon has progressed into most regions of the central-western and central-eastern Arabian Sea, extending into parts of Goa, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. The department indicates that ongoing cyclonic activity over north Kerala is responsible for the intense precipitation currently being experienced across the state.

The IMD further forecasts continued heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of Kerala and Mahe from June 6 to June 9. Additional rainfall is expected to be accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds, with speeds ranging from 40 to 50 kilometres per hour across various regions from June 6 to June 10. Caution has been advised for fishermen along the Kerala-Lakshadweep-Karnataka coasts due to anticipated strong winds of 40 to 60 kilometres per hour in the area from June 6 to June 9.

This forecast underscores the necessity for residents to stay alert and informed regarding the evolving weather situation in Kerala over the coming days and adjust their plans accordingly in response to the conditions. Authorities remain vigilant, continuing to monitor the situation closely as it develops.
