Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, a Member of Parliament from the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), has expressed her support for the ongoing student protests regarding the alleged leak of the NEET exam paper. According to her, the youth across the nation are standing firmly against perceived injustices. In her statements made in New Delhi, she highlighted how individuals who raise their voices against the government are often branded as “anti-nationals” or “Urban Naxals”.

During her interaction with the media, Kanimozhi stated, “The youth of this country stands against injustice. They have been calling us anti-nationals, Naxalites… Anyone who raises their voice against this government has been labelled as anti-nationals, as Urban Naxals.” She emphasized that young people have united to demonstrate their collective strength against these characterisations.

Historical Opposition to NEET By DMK

Kanimozhi mentioned that her party has consistently opposed the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) since its inception, claiming that it disproportionately favours privileged and urban students. She remarked, “Only privileged students and students from cities can sit for these examinations and pass them.” This longstanding opposition reflects the party’s concerns over equal access to educational opportunities.

The DMK has endeavoured to challenge NEET through legislative measures in Tamil Nadu. Kanimozhi noted that the DMK had passed a law against NEET while in power. However, she criticised the current government, stating that the legislation has not been enacted due to the Governor’s inaction and a lack of support from the President.

She further asserted that many DMK MPs from the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha have rallied alongside her to show their solidarity with the students. This ongoing commitment illustrates the DMK’s enduring stance against the examination and its processes.

Government’s Stance and Continued Parliamentary Deadlock

The government has reportedly indicated its readiness to engage in discussion regarding the NEET exam leak; however, deadlock persists in Parliament. The Opposition continues to demand the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan while insisting that the issue related to the NEET-UG paper leak be addressed under specific parliamentary rules.

The government has responded by stating that the Opposition should not impose additional conditions for the discussions. This ongoing standoff reveals the complexities of the political landscape surrounding educational reforms and administrative accountability in India.

As tensions rise between the government and the Opposition, the future of NEET and its scrutiny remains uncertain. The collective actions of the students, alongside the backing of political parties like the DMK, may substantially influence the discourse on educational fairness and access in the country.
