The third round of discussions between Union Ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh and a delegation from the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) took place on July 25 at the Constitution Club of India. This meeting follows the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, which came as a result of ongoing protests against examination irregularities, particularly concerning the NEET-UG paper leak.

Both ministers arrived at the venue in the morning, having departed from their respective residences. Pradhan’s resignation was formally addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and was positioned as a move to safeguard the interests of students and the nation amid escalating protests.

Pradhan expressed concerns in his resignation letter about the potential for the protests to be exploited by individuals with anti-national agendas. He underscored the importance of maintaining national unity and not allowing the future of students to become mired in legal disputes.

Protests Motivate Ministerial Resignation

The backdrop to Pradhan’s resignation includes widespread civil agitation over claims of examination irregularities, particularly after reports emerged concerning the NEET-UG examination. In recent weeks, demonstrators led by the CJP mobilised significant public support, which included a 26-day hunger strike led by activist Sonam Wangchuk at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.

The CJP, despite having welcomed Pradhan’s decision to resign, has reiterated its commitment to continue protests until all its demands are addressed. CJP leader Abhijeet Dipke spoke to supporters, framing this resignation as a notable victory and the first instance of a Union Minister resigning during Prime Minister Modi’s tenure.

The organisation’s demands encompass financial compensation of Rs 1 crore for families of students who have died by suicide in relation to examination issues, as well as guarantees against any punitive actions against student protesters.

Government’s Response to Examination Irregularities

In the wake of his resignation, Pradhan defended the government’s management of the NEET-UG situation. He noted that, following the discovery of irregularities during the May 3 examination, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) was tasked with conducting an investigation. Additionally, measures were taken to annul the examination and provide an opportunity for a re-test, which occurred on June 21 for over two million candidates.

Pradhan also revealed plans for the NEET-UG examination to transition entirely to a Computer-Based Test (CBT) format from the next academic year. This decision aims to bolster the transparency and integrity of the examination process, a concern echoed by many stakeholders involved.

Furthermore, the Central Government is reportedly in the process of formulating stricter anti-paper leak legislation. This new framework will introduce provisions for Special Fast-Track Courts and establish a Special Task Force (STF), all designed to combat examination-related malpractices more effectively across the nation.
