Jaishankar Reports Advancements in India-EU Relations Following Brussels Summit

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met senior European Union leaders in Brussels on Tuesday to review progress in the India-EU partnership, with discussions focusing on trade, technology, security, maritime cooperation and resilient supply chains.

Jaishankar, who is on a two-day visit to Belgium from July 14 to 15, is participating in the third India-EU Trade and Technology Council meeting. He is accompanied by Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and Minister of State Jitin Prasada.

India-EU Partnership Reviewed After Summit

Jaishankar met European Council President Antonio Costa and said the two sides had made significant progress since the India-EU Summit held earlier this year.

In a post on X, Jaishankar said, “Joined my colleagues to recognise the significant progress in our partnership since the landmark India-EU summit earlier this year. Value his guidance and warm sentiments for advancing our trade and technology cooperation.”

The India-EU Summit was held in New Delhi in January, when Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen visited India as chief guests for the Republic Day celebrations.

Co-chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and European leaders, the summit resulted in a landmark Free Trade Agreement and a new Security and Defence Partnership.

West Asia, Maritime Security And Supply Chains Discussed

Jaishankar began his Brussels engagements with a meeting with European Commission Vice President and High Representative Kaja Kallas.

The discussions covered the conflict in West Asia, the need to maintain peace and stability, safe and unimpeded maritime commerce, and strengthening the India-EU Strategic Partnership to improve supply chain resilience.

In another post on X, Jaishankar said, “Started my visit to Brussels, meeting with EU HRVP @kajakallas. Had useful discussions on West Asia and the need to ensure peace and stability. Exchanged views on the importance of safe and unimpeded maritime commerce.”

Kallas described 2026 as a “historic year for EU-India relations” and said cooperation between the two sides was expanding across trade, technology, security and defence.

“This is a historic year for EU-India relations, with our cooperation deepening across trade, technology, security and defence. It was good to speak today with @DrSJaishankar about taking our partnership further, including on maritime security,” she said.

She added, “Together, we must defend freedom of navigation, protect open and resilient supply chains, as well as deepen cooperation between EU operations ATALANTA and ASPIDES and the Indian navy to uphold security in the Indo-Pacific and beyond.”

Talks Also Focus On Belgium Investments

Jaishankar also met Flanders Minister-President Matthias Diependaele and Minister Annick De Ridder to discuss economic cooperation.

Referring to the meeting, Jaishankar said, “The India-EU FTA has enabled a wide range of possibilities for India’s cooperation with Belgium. Discussed opportunities for businesses and investments from the Flanders region.”

The meetings in Brussels focused on expanding India-EU cooperation across trade, technology and security, while also exploring new business and investment opportunities with Belgium.
