The CSR Journal Magazine

Tap water supply by the government of Rajasthan has become a matter of concern for city residents. Be it Sushilpura or Langar ke Balaji ka Rasta near Nahargarh Fort Road, residents have been complaining of yellowish water from supply for over several days now. This problem isn’t limited to one particular area, few days back residents of Sushilpura in Sodala area reportedly fell ill due to sewage-mixed drinking water. And now the residents of the walled-city area have raised similar concerns. On Friday when MLA Balmukund Acharya visited Langar ke Balaji ka Rasta situated near Nahargarh Fort Road for inspection of sanitation arrangements, residents handed him a bottle filled with yellowish water, stating that they have been receiving this water for a couple of days.

Yellowish water supply continues for over two weeks

Taking note of the matter Balmukund Acharya immediately asked the official of Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) to test the water and confirm if it is clean enough to drink. Other areas of walled-city like the Tripolia Bazar area, here too residents are complaining of yellowish supply water for at least 15 days. One Arvind Methi who resides at Tripolia Bazar are in walled-city said, “We are hesitant in consuming the yellow water that has been supplied to us, even though there is no smell yet we are concerned if this is fit to drink.” He added that they had complained and officials had tested the water and confirmed that it is fit to drink, however clear water supply is yet to be restored. Another local resident of the same area Vikas Tiwari noted that many people residing in his locacity have stopped drinking this water and are dependent on purchased water bottles, “We are using tap water supply only for bathing and washing clothes. We don’t drink it anymore.”

Experts link yellow water to algae decomposition

Similar situation is being faced by residents of Surajpura, their problem is a little more severe, it has been months that residents have been complaining, but no action has been taken yet. One resident Sanjeev Kumar shared that they have stopped filing complaints, as no action is being taken and they are expecting no action in future as well. Another resident Rajpal Singh said they have doubts on the supply of water as the colour remains yellowish. One water quality expert Anurag Trivedi said that the yellow colour of the water is because of the chlorophyta algae. “Because of the increase in temperature, the algae are decomposing and this leads to the discoloration of the water even though it is being treated.”
