ISRO Provides Updates on Gaganyaan Astronaut Training and Mission Readiness

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has announced important updates regarding the training of astronauts for its anticipated Gaganyaan mission. These insights, shared in ISRO’s latest annual report, outline the preparations of the first astronauts, who are referred to as Gaganyatris, for their upcoming space voyage. A key feature of this training is the utilisation of a Static Mock-up Simulator, which is a life-sized model of the crew module designed to immerse astronauts in realistic mission-like conditions.

Training sessions within this simulator have varied in length, lasting from two to 18 hours. These sessions focus on evaluating crucial parameters such as the astronauts’ ability to operate within the crew module, handle onboard audio-visual communication systems, adhere to emergency exit protocols, and respond effectively to unexpected mission scenarios.

This simulator not only aids in familiarising astronauts with actual mission conditions but also helps them adapt to the confined space of the crew module. Habitability trials are integral to this aspect, ensuring that the astronauts can perform efficiently in limited spaces over extended periods, an essential requirement for successful space missions.

Technological Enhancements in Training Methods

An advanced Virtual Reality (VR) Training Simulator complements the physical simulator, offering a digital reproduction of mission scenarios. This enhanced system allows Gaganyatris to practise various operations, navigation tasks, and emergency protocols within a controlled environment that feels authentic. The incorporation of VR technology not only boosts situational awareness but also mitigates the dependency on physical training methods alone.

In addition to these training tools, ISRO has created a specialised Mission Control Training Room. This facility has been designed to prepare the ground personnel who will support the Gaganyaan mission. It facilitates coordinated training between the astronauts and the mission control teams, ensuring smooth communication during the flight operations.

Alongside crew training initiatives, ISRO has made significant strides in bolstering its communication and tracking infrastructure. The agency has successfully operationalised the Amazon Web Services (AWS) network, which has undergone validation in previous missions. Furthermore, ISRO has cooperated with the European Space Agency to test communication systems, including conducting Radio Frequency Compatibility Tests and comprehensive checks for audio and video data transmission at a ground station located in Germany.

Future Prospects and International Collaborations

India’s own infrastructure has also seen considerable expansion, with the establishment of feeder stations under the IDRSS-1 network located at the Indian Space Research Organisation’s Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC) in Bengaluru, as well as the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SHAR). Successful demonstrations of data transmission via GSAT satellites have been achieved, and terrestrial communication links now connect the Indian Naval Station in SHAR with mission control centres in Bengaluru and Delhi.

International partnerships play a pivotal role in these developments. ISRO has entered into a contract with the Swedish Space Corporation to provide ground station support and has also established a new terminal in Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Australia, which is expected to enhance global tracking capabilities. Despite these advancements, the crewed mission has faced delays, and the launch is unlikely to occur before 2028. Moreover, ISRO has yet to announce a specific date for the inaugural uncrewed mission, anticipated to take place in 2026.
