Several clubs from the Indian Super League (ISL) have issued a joint statement expressing their concerns to the All India Football Federation (AIFF) regarding their commitment to the league. This warning comes in light of ongoing uncertainties that are reportedly affecting the stability of Indian football, with the clubs stating that they might reconsider their level of engagement if these issues persist. The statement was released on Friday, just prior to the AIFF’s important Special General Body Meeting.

The clubs involved in this statement include Kerala Blasters, Mumbai City FC, Bengaluru FC, Inter Kashi, and Sporting Club Delhi. They articulated their distress and disappointment regarding the current state of professional football in India. The statement indicated an impending reassessment of their commitments beyond the current season if there is no resolution to prevailing uncertainties.

They further elaborated on their history of investment in the sport, highlighting that their commitment remains, yet the lack of structural and commercial clarity has made it challenging to maintain financial and operational commitments necessary for sustainable competition.

Calls for Financial Sustainability and Alternative Models

The clubs emphasised that the future of Indian football should hinge on a financially sustainable league structure. They urged the AIFF to give serious consideration to a proposed alternative commercial model that the clubs believe is viable and constructive. Their statement insisted that this new model should be evaluated on its merits along with other proposals submitted to the AIFF.

In their joint communication, they reiterated that a sustainable and inclusive framework needed to be established to address the realities faced by those investing in and operating within the league. They expressed a desire for collaborative efforts towards building a framework that benefits all stakeholders involved.

The timing of this statement coincides with the AIFF’s Special General Body Meeting scheduled for Saturday, May 23, where discussions regarding the league’s future commercial structure are expected to take centre stage.

Ongoing Commercial Challenges in Indian Football

The ISL is currently at a pivotal juncture as it grapples with its commercial framework following the expiration of the Master Rights Agreement between the AIFF and Football Sports Development Ltd earlier this season. This development has led to a prolonged period of uncertainty, affecting operational and financial conditions for several clubs.

Reports indicate that numerous clubs have faced difficulties related to player salaries, contract renewals, and long-term planning as a result of the ongoing deadlock. The proposed commercial model, championed by Genius Sports, has emerged as a contentious issue, with the company allegedly presenting a Rs 2129 crore deal for the next five years. However, the clubs are reportedly against the terms tied to this proposal.

Instead, they have advocated a structure where Genius Sports would assume the role of a data and technology partner whilst the clubs retain a significant portion of the league’s economic interests, approximately 90 per cent. This shift is claimed to be essential for the future viability of the league.

AIFF Faces Legal Scrutiny Amid Growing Pressures

As tensions rise between the clubs and the AIFF, AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey has assured that the ISL will be conducted in a “full-fledged” format in the upcoming season. His remarks followed the recent ISL title win by East Bengal on May 21, where he asserted that Indian football is progressing, despite administrative challenges.

Nonetheless, the uncertainty surrounding the league continues to cause widespread concern, with coaches, including East Bengal’s Oscar Bruzon, indicating they may reconsider their positions unless clarity is attained regarding the ISL’s future structure.

Furthermore, the legality of the upcoming Special General Body Meeting has come under scrutiny, with opposition from AIFF executive committee member Valanka Alemao, who has questioned whether the federation has adhered to the necessary constitutional framework mandated by the Supreme Court. Despite these complications, the meeting is aimed at further dialogues regarding governance, commercial sustainability, and the long-term future of Indian football.
